New snippet from WIDOW'S TALE!

Serena ran on instinct. Clouds of moisture billowed from her lips into her eyes, while muscles pumped and groaned against mistreatment.

Unconsciously, she aimed towards the soaring silhouette of Victory Cove’s unmanned lighthouse. Racking sobs prevented her from advancing any further, though. Her knees folded and she fell headlong into the frozen pasture.

The ground was hard and cold. Unforgiving. Serena’s body writhed in pain across the brittle grass. She came to rest in a fetal position, her sobs hollow echoes. Agony tore through her, though little had to do with the fall.

All at once, the tears stopped. Serena heard the distant sound of broken waves, and the roar of arctic winds. She felt so tired—so utterly drained.
She was aware that if she slept here, she may never wake.

Recognizing this fact, Serena closed her eyes.

Thank you, Chlorine. Here is Friday's WIDOW'S TALE snippet.............

Her eyes shot wide open.

"What is it?" Such was the panic in Serena’s gaping stare, Brett felt dread clench his stomach.

"He’s here." She whispered in a detached voice.

Instinctively, Brett came to his feet, listening for any trace of the invader. The loft was silent apart from the crackling of the fire and the distant rumble of the ocean.

Serena’s gaze was unfocused and he considered touching her to see if she was truly awake, but then he heard it. The methodic footfalls emanated from behind her, their steps deliberate. Brett was already certain of their destination as he hastened to cut them off at the front door.

There seemed no mechanical source for this unsolicited visitor. It stemmed from the very floor beneath him, crossing wooden planks out into the night. With a growl, he hurled open the door and raced down the steps, determined this time to catch the culprit.

At the base of the stairwell, Brett wavered. The haunting memory of Serena’s oblique gaze troubled him. And the sound that ensued from above made him sick.

"No!" Brett tried to deny what he had just heard.

With dread he vaulted up the stairs.

I looked at your book, Pat. It looks good!

I've been negligent with my snippets. Here's a new one from WIDOW'S TALE.............

"We’ll check it out. First, let’s take a look and see what your old lighthouse is hiding."

The door was unlocked. Wary, Brett proceeded with the flashlight. He entered the cylindrical edifice, scaling the beam up a spiral staircase, past the network of cobwebs, into obscure shadows that tortured the soul with unlimited possibilities of danger. If one believed in ghosts, this place seemed like a potential breeding ground for them.

Brett flinched against the chain of echoes. Their footfalls resonated with chilling clarity while the waves that crashed below sounded as if they would tow the precarious structure off its moorings and out to sea.

"And this is where you would come to play?" He asked of the dark.

"It was beautiful then" Serena whispered. "So big—fascinating. An adventure."

"Yeah, yeah, I get the picture. Suddenly I’m not big on the adventure part."

Brett reached for Serena’s hand to ensure she was still right behind him. "How trustworthy are these stairs?"

"They supported me fifteen years ago."

I've been editing feverishly and I'm happy to say that the sequel (VICTORY COVE) will be available shortly!!! All the eccentric characters from O'Flanagans pub will be back.

Greetings!
Just a reminder that the Smashwords coupon for WIDOW'S TALE is expiring November 1st.
$.99 can buy you danger, romance, maybe a ghost or two, and several mugs of beer at O'Flanagans Inn.

Here's an example from WIDOW'S TALE ..............

O’Flanagans was as much a tradition in the small Maine coastal village of Victory Cove as were the lobster boats and sailors that kept the establishment thriving over fifty years, and through three generations. This colonial institution was the home of Serena’s childhood. It was also her legacy now that her parents had retired and moved to Florida.

Serena talked the O’Flanagans out of flying north after Alan’s disappearance. Instead, she was grateful to have the pub to keep her busy. Its patrons were family in their own right, protective and loyal to the last O’Flanagan.

The heavy oak door drew shut behind Serena, locking out the bad weather with a finality that almost made her feel safe. She leaned back against it and eyed the overhead wooden beams—timber rafters permeated with the aroma of beer and lobster bisque. The scent stabilized Serena. She drew in another deep breath and held it until the trembling in her limbs subsided.

"Yo, Rena, are you going to keep a thirsty man waiting, just hanging around here like a long-haired dog on a hot summer day?"

In this place, there was no time for emotion. Alan was dead. He would not hurt her anymore.

But finding his body would have made it seem real.

I haven't snippet'ed in awhile. Here's a scene from WIDOW'S TALE

Her words were lost to Brett as he felt the vise of panic cinch his stomach. "Serena," he whispered in desperation.

Brett launched through the oscillating door, into the empty kitchen where he saw the back door banging restlessly in the wind. For a moment he stood rooted, captivated by sporadic glimpses of the frigid hell outside.

Gray—black—gray—black, the door swung back and forth, mocking him.
Too late. Too late.

A footfall behind him caused Brett to whirl and discover John Morse at his heel. The man peered over his shoulder into the fog bank beyond the gaping door.

"Let me guess," Morse said, "she’s gone? And you know who took her, don’t you? It’s time to start redirecting your anger, Murphy. There were several people that had issues with your brother."

Just incase there's anyone out there that ABSOLUTELY HAS TO have a fix of danger, romance, a frigid Nor'Easter and maybe a ghost, the .99 coupon for WIDOW'S TALE expires November 1st. Then WIDOW'S TALE turns into a pumpkin and reverts back to 1.99

I forgot to post a snippet. Here is a little haunting excerpt from WIDOW'S TALE to get us in the mood for Halloween.

Serena’s feet crunched over frozen turf. Air billowed from her mouth as her eyes began to tear from the wind. She tucked her chin even deeper into the down collar. Walking backwards against the gust, she focused on the floodlights illuminating the tavern’s deck. From this perspective, O’Flanagans represented a warm and inviting symbol of hope, the lights on the third floor reminding her that Brett lay safe and asleep.

Turning back into the blustery weather, sounds came to Serena in muffled echoes within the cocoon of the jacket hiked around her ears. She nearly missed the grinding tread to her right. Instinctively she crouched, cursing the open knolls that lead to the lighthouse. She prayed for cloud cover—any form of camouflage. But the moon glimmered across the fresh snow.

Spinning about, she studied the dirt path that led to the light-keeper’s house like a black vein scarring white marble.

The path was empty. She was alone.

In the spirit of Halloween I thought I'd post a scene from WIDOW'S TALE where Serena wonders if her ghost is truly a ghost.

Alan—still alive?

The thought rolled in Serena’s head, inciting an attack of lightheadedness. Would he do this? Would he be malicious enough to drive her towards the brink of madness? Prey on her vulnerability at a time of such despair?

Alan, alive.

Was that such a startling revelation? Hadn’t she felt him all along? Wasn’t that why she sought the cliffs each night, hoping for closure?

"Yes," Serena choked. "Yes, he could do this."

Strong fingers touched Serena’s jaw, dragging her from anguish. In the candlelight Brett’s features were eclipsed, but his touch stole through her.

"Look at me." Brett’s other hand reached up to cup her face, his thumb gently tracing it.

"Serena, you’re not safe. I know what Alan’s capable of, and I know when he’s got it out for someone, he’ll carry it out to the end. We’ve got to go to the police."

Serena laughed. "And say what? A corpse is chasing me?"

The new Kindle software really works!

WIDOW'S TALE is available for $1.99 on Kindle http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00147RWB8 as well as Smashwords.

A review posted today sums up the book for those wondering about it.

I really enjoyed this book! I thought it was going to be a paranormal ghost story, but it's not - it's a mystery / romance (and an excellent one). The writing style was engaging and the chapters alternated smoothly between Serena and Brett's viewpoints, which helped to develop both characters. The dialogue flowed naturally and the relationship between Serena and Brett developed nicely. I could feel Serena's anguish and despair as she feared she was going insane. And Brett was truly a hero as he sought to discover the truth and free Serena of her ghosts so they could have a future together. I am glad to have discovered so many great books through kindleboards and I look forward to more books from this author.
