A new color e-paper competitor next year

from engadget.com http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/03/s...per-next-year/

"SiPix (a division of our old friend AU Optronics) has announced that it will bring "a small number" of color e-ink displays to market by the end of 2010. Apparently, a breakthrough in thin-film-transistor panels has put the company on the fast-track to making this technology commercially viable. If so, it could beat rivals like PrimeView (the manufacturer of both the Kindle and Sony's Reader) to the punch by a year or two. "Making colored electronic paper displays is our top priority," said SiPix president Andrew Tseng. "We are in talks with customers to supply colored displays ... as [color] would encourage advertisers to place ads on [electronic] publications, which then would be able to provide more content [to readers] for free." While PrimeView is currently scrambling to buy up US-based E Ink, AU Optronics is scheduled to ship its first e-paper display modules to customers this quarter. [...]"

Lets hope that the market for color epaper grows enough to push out interesting products!

Shame they don't make a point of mentioning the benefits for content from colour such as magazines & comics, diagrams in text books or simply nicer looking covers on novels rather than the advertising potential.

well, attracting additional money can only be good- if they don't force you to stare at the advertisement for several seconds

It is slightly worrying that was the first thing that sprang to mind for them though.

The disappointing thing is that it will take a few years to get product out after the display is ready. Just look at Plaslogic. One interesting company in the same space is PixelQi. They're targeting the netbook market and OLPC, but it does look like a very promising display. It has a huge leg up in that it uses today's manufacturing processes and is drop-in compatible with existing products.

I agree that the 3Qi technology show a lot of promise. In fact I'm holding out for a netbook with one of these displays. One limitation though is that they can only produce full color with the backlight. So we're still a ways off from having mass produced [high contrast] color reflective displays.
