Dorothy L. Sayers (1893–1957)
Gaudy Night (1936) Harriet Vane is asked to investigate acts of vandalism at her old Oxford College, and eventually calls Lord Peter Wimsey in to help. The novel is much longer than its predecessors (c. 160,000 words) and contains some reflections on how women might resolve the choice between marriage and working life. This work is in the Canadian public domain OR the copyright holder has given specific permission for distribution. It may still be under copyright in some countries.
