Another Mysterious Screen Issue

I turned on my Cybook which has been sitting quietly on my dining room table for the last four months only to see this. The faint lines are when it is off. The plaid pattern is when it is turning on. The lines at the top are when it is on. Calibre recognizes the device and loads books on and off of it. it is fully charged and i have attempted reset. The Cybook is one and a half years old.

I am willing to be convinced that this is a broken screen due to some mysterious accident, I just want your views on whether there is a chance it is something else (less expensive or complicated to fix).

That looks more like a broken display controller to me, which is a warranty repair. I can see no trace of a broken screen substrate.

Have you tried charging your Gen3? My mother-in-law's 500 looked a bit odd because it was trying to turn on and did not have enough battery left to be able to do so properly. Charging it with the AC adapter sorted the problem.

Looks like the CyBook may be out of warranty though (a year and a half old). .
"Bookeen standard Product warranty is one (1) year after date of delivery."

I'm wondering if anyone knows how much a controller repair is likely to cost.

In Europe you have 3 years "warranty".

The screen and controller come as a single "unit". If it is indeed out of warranty, it'll probably be the standard Ç120 "screen replacement" charge (although, in reality, they seem to send everyone who sends in an "old" 200MHz Gen3 a "new" 400MHz one as a replacement).

Not everywhere, Tommy. A 12 month warranty is still normal in the UK for most consumer products.

That's not true, dont mistake between waranty and "hidden default" ("vice cachÚ" in french) waranty. The first one is for all the device, the other is only on some picky points, and the "EU 2 Year" waranty that a lot of people said about is only the second, this is not a full waranty.

The 12 month warranty can be a bit deceptive in the UK. We can still return goods long after 12 months - retailers and manufacturers will flatly say no in almost every occasion but that doesn't change the fact we have a right to expect an item to last a reasonable length of time.

If a washing machine "wears out" after 2 years then we are legally able to expect it to be repaired, or receive a partial refund. Generally we have to get trading standards involved in order to get anywhere with it though. Shop assistants are completely unaware we have this legal protection against poor quality goods, and will almost never entertain, meaning it's a whole load of hassle.

This is worth reading.

Notice the different between warranty and "warranty". I quoted the word since I did not have time to look up the correct term. If the screen controller breaks inside 3 years the EU rules says that the seller should fix it.

The first year, it's "automatic" it's the manufacturer to prove that you break it (or not) for the next years that you who need to prove that you didn't break it by using it. This form of warranty is not about the wear of the device. If something is due to the device aging, this form of waranty is not valid.

And screen controllers does not age in three years so it is valid for screen controllers.

I do not get why people want to explain or rationalize that companies does not follow EU rules.

Only if it causes the problem and dropping the device will not break the screen controller.
