Naah, that's not it. We just like to mess with you 'cos you tried to leave once, and we wouldn't let you. Of course, most of the other states that went through that same thing eventually got over it...

Most of the other states weren't independent countries before joining first either...

Weellll ... I wouldn't be so sure, you haven't spent much time in rural (fill in the blank of former Confederate states) lately. Lots of those folks are still fighting the "war between the states"! AKA, in the dastardly north, the civil war.

It's become politically incorrect to display the Confederate flag, but there are still plenty of (fill in the blank of former Confederate states) cracker rednecks who will come to fisty cuffs over it!

As I'd made reference to earlier, myself. Well, some people just don't have the capacity to move on... they want to continue to make their ancestors' mistakes, usually because they don't understand why they were mistakes in the first place.

But that's neither here nor there. Texas wanted to secede because they didn't like the U.S. government bossing them around... to which the other states wisely replied: "Get in line." But Texas always thought it had more of a right to secede than the rest of the states, thanks to its size and standing... to which the other states wisely replied: "Get back in line!"

Yep, we have to follow other people's mistakes instead, who won't even admit that they are mistakes, 'cause they're on top....

No, because of it's previous independence. And you might discuss being a culture and a people vis a vis being an independent country with Poles and Balts.....

Besides, the issue of legal secession from the United States has never been address in a legal sense. Look up Lincoln's response to Fort Sumner's attack. There's nothing in the constitution that forbids secession, any more than there is anything in the constitution that defines what a living being is.

So, sure, the U.S. wasn't any better than any other country when it exercised its Manifest Destiny on y'all. Now, you're known for your space launching pads, a few quarts of WD-40 and the team that quite regularly whomps the behinds of the Washington Redskins (appropos, that). But it could've been worse: You could've ended up as the biggest casino in the northern hemisphere.

It's impossible to say whether Texas would have been better off as independent or sovereign... that day is past, that ship has sailed. And now we all have to pitch together to build brand new ships, before we all get swamped. Dwelling on the past only serves to delay things and get our ankles wet.

So, how's about we just say, "The past is past," shake hands like men, and get back to work, eh? Shoulder-to-shoulder, all hands on deck, remember the Alamo, and all that? Wot? Capital!

Many of us that grew up with family members that still remembered the days of reconstruction following the war of nothern aggression were taught about Texas' special status as a free and independent republic when it joined the US.

The war of the early 1860s was just one of many movements since the founding of the republic to split it into two or more units. Even within the past 15 - 20 years there have been movements such as the PacRim split that would take California, Nevada, Washington, and Oregon and possibly join them with British Columbia to form a new country. (I do not remember how Alaska and Hawaii would be partitioned.)

BTW: RSE, I assume that 1/2 cup of chili powder for 3 lbs of meat was for the mild or tenderfoot chili

Not Sumner .... although there is a Fort Sumner. I think you mean Fort Sumter.

And you are correct, there is nothing in the Constitution with regard to the right of one or more States to secede from the United States. In point of fact, the South was within its rights to do so.

Also worth noting, is that there is much taught about the American Civil War that is simply dead wrong. Every time I hear that "Lincoln freed the slaves" crap, I just cringe.

But, oh well .... there's no bucking the ability of American schools to do a really rotten job of teaching.

My school didn't teach the party line! They came down like a bag of red rectangular things every time we tried to have a party on school grounds or, lacking that, the football stadium. Totally anti-party them!

Nope, just plain eatin'/cookin' chili. I like my chili to flavorful but not particularly hot. Call me a wimp if you like....

Once upon a time, they called that Ecotopia (it excluded southern California and BC). Oh, if that country had been founded, I would have paid money to get there.
