New Sony model to be called PRS-300 and PRS-600

A poster on Sony Insider forum discovered two service manuals for models named PRS-300 and PRS-600.

Both manuals mention "US, Canadian, UK, French, German, Netherlands Model"

Approximate specs:

PRS-300: 5" screen, no touch screen, no audio output, no card slots, ~440MB user partition, 220g.
PRS-600: 6" screen, touch screen, audio output, SD/MS slots, ~380MB user partition, 286g.

Manuals mention silver, red and black colors for both models.
No built-in lighting or wireless connection seems to be present in either one.

But there is absolutely no information about the functionality in those manuals... No mentioning of Wi-Fi, very little about the formats. All we get is the names and the appearance of the models. The screen size of PRS-300 is 5", the PRS-600 - probably 6".

the PRS-600 (according to that document) it touch-screen, and it has a MP3 player.

The PRS-300 document doesn't mention MP3 at all.

PRS-300 looks ugly and "joystick" in the middle not convenient , the 600 ... another touch model without conveniently placed Next/Prev page buttons ...

Yeah... One sure hopes Sony learned its lessons with the PRS-700, but perhaps it didn't. As we don't have any other photos of the new models, I wouldn't dare speculate about the capabilities, but they do feel a little bit on the cheaper side.

If the new features are limited to fewer buttons and a slightly lower price, with the same blurry screen as in PRS-700, this may be an utter disaster.

Slow down We hardly know anything yet. I highly doubt they're releasing something that is worse than the current models.

Personally I like the centre button placement, especially given the device is small. Nice designs overall, I'm lloking for ward to some official documentation and hands-on reports.

Why would you need NexT/Prev page buttons if you can simply swipe a symmetrical digit across the page?

EDITED: I looked more closely at the 600 and it does, indeed, appear to have Next/Prev buttons.

The second one looks substantially larger than the other (by its size relative to the SONY label, etc.). It looks more like the size of the Kindle DX (9.7" screen).

EDIT: Ooops. The PDF manual gives its dimensions: 4-7/8" x 6-7/8"

The service manuals actually tell us quite a bit. For instance, neither one has wifi. If either one did, there'd be an antenna as a service part, and possibly a wifi daughtercard. The 600 has SD/MSPro slots, the 300 doesn't. Both are minor iterations of the current models. The 300 is a slightly downsized 505, minus card slots and mp3 playback. The 600 is a reworked 700.

From the parts list it seems both models will have silver, black and red colors available.

You've already found the dimensions. Those are the same as the 505's.

Another interesting tidbit:
"Macintosh and Mac OS are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries."
I guess that's another confirmation of Mac support.

Yeah, at first I was excited by the copyright info for OpenSSL, thinking it was for secure wireless connections. But then I realized it's just used to handle the DRM decryption.
