Epub & animated gifs
I recently noticed that calibre's ebook-viewer supports animated gif files in Epub. Curiously enough, Adobe DE does not. Does this mean it isn't part of the standard, or does DE lack full image support?

Since calibre's EPUB viewer is an enhanced browser it supports a lot of things that Adobe's viewer doesn't I don't ever recall anything in the EPUB spec abou animated GIFs though.

The standard only mentions GIF89a, so if GIF89 supports animation, ePUB should support animation.

However, the standard does mention that animation features of SVG are not supported and must not be used in publications, so we could assume the same about animated GIFs.

I wonder if it supports animated PNG. PNG files typically take less bytes then GIF.

Does such a thing exist? According to Wikipedia, PNG is single-image, although there exist a companion MNG format for animations. But MNG is not PNG. (There's APNG too, but that's not supported in the PNG standard either.)
