Hello, does a laptop make sense?

Hello,

I've been thinkering for a while about this e-paper tecnology that is powering most of the latest ebook readers. With current energy crysis, a screen that doesn't need energy (other than refresh) is quite amazing.

Most of the e-paper implementations have been great for reading purposes, considering the great success of most of the devices, and I think there could be more than just reading / browsing.

Imagine a kindle with a full-size-keyboard and a whole lot of software that would let you write-emails/write-documents/chat/browse the web. I think this could be great for people that don't need fancy-graphics, and just need a long lasting battery and easy-on-the-eyes device.

I know there are a lot of disadvantages for such a device, like the inability of using a mouse, the inability of viewing any kind of multimedia, but frankly I would much rather have something designed specifically for my writing.

What do you think?

I'm no expert, but I suspect that the refresh speed would be much too low for most computer applications. The e-paper technology is best suited for displays that don't need refreshing very often, and where the slow refresh rate is acceptable. It wouldn't be suitable, for example, for scrolling a web page or dragging icons around.

But I'm willing to be proved wrong.

Welcome to MobileRead, bellosguardo!

I believe someone started a thread where they discussed a R&D laptop that could operate in two modes, a standard laptop mode and an eink mode. If you do a search of the forum, I think you will find the thread. Personally, I like the fact that my reader is dedicated to reading only. I don't need it to do anything more than that and I have a feeling that doing anything more would add weight which I definitely do not want.

Congratulations on your new reader!

Happy reading.

Hi bellosguardo

I tried to use the Microsoft reader on My Note book and it's OK but
using a Ereader is so much better, just being able to adjust the type size makes a big differance to Me.

It sounds more like one of those mini-laptops that people are carrying around in their purses. That would be a great application for a writer, to have a device to compose, review, research, and network. But it doesn't sound like eink is ready for that yet. Give it a couple years to develop eink, and I'm sure we'll see a writer's edition ebook device, IMHO.
