Oliphant, Margaret: Madonna Mary, v3. 27 Jun 2009
Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) was a popular Scottish writer. A widow who became the bread winner for her extended family, she was very prolific and wrote in a wide variety of genres.
In the spectrum of 19th century literature, she is generally seen as occupying the space between Jane Austen and Anthony Trollope. Like Austen, she often exhibits a delightful wit; and like Trollope, the social mores of the time were a source of much inspiration.
'Madonna Mary' tells the story of a young widow and her three sons, as they struggle to come to terms with the ramifications of her somewhat unusual marriage.
