Exclamation Kindle DX Sold Out; Try Again Wednesday

http://www.pcworld.com/article/16663...ml?tk=rss_news
Quote:
The Kindle DX, which started shipping on June 10, is now listed by Amazon.com Inc. as out of stock until June 17.

Apparently, the pre-orders and first-day orders of the 9.7-inch wireless reading device, priced at $489, exhausted Amazon's supply. Amazon officials were unavailable to comment immediately.

Analyst Van Baker of Gartner Inc., said Amazon is probably intentionally keeping the DX supply low to attract more interest.

I wonder why anyone would expect "Amazon officials to comment"? Things go out of stock at Amazon all the time, and one doesn't expect an "official announcement" about it.

Because this time it's likely to be picked up by the media, and thus generate additional interest and exposure for the DX.

as a marketing ploy it is often a very successful one....
in fact it makes me wonder if the "selling out" could be a ruse to generate this kind of interest (not that there has been a shortage of media activity on the Kindle in all its 3 guises)....

but I'm probably just being cynical seeing there are other manufacturers with the same excuse......it's likely just a problem with supply of e-ink displays.

Bookeen are sold out of the Gen3 at the moment. As you say, it's almost certainly the supply of screens that's the limiting factor.

Hmm, isn't that a good thing? It would imply that people are picking up on the technology (reading from a device, instead from a book).

Unless you're waiting for your device, then it's a bad thing

Can't decide between the IRex Digital Reader, or Sony PRS600. That Plastic Logic device looks good too and the Hanvon WISEreader N518 as well. And don't forget about the Txtr reader! I could also wait for the BeBook2?

Or should I go for the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS?

But how many of the people who have bought the DX already owned an ereader compared to new users of the technology?

Right now, the website says it is out of stock until June 22 so looks like either their second shipment was delayed, or lost of folks who got the first ones had to return them due to defects (thus depleting the second shipment)... or that the demand is starting to ramp up for the DX...

Anyone have any idea/guesstimate how many units were sold in this initial roll-out?

This is a total swag but....

The Kindle DX has been out a little over a week and currently has 136 reviews.

By contrast, when the Kindle 2 had been out for roughly the same time period, it had around 450 reviews.

Not all reviews in either case are from people that actually own the device -- in both cases, there are a fair number of "I don't own a Kindle but I'm going to voice my opinion anyway..."

Extrapolate from this what you will.
