Question about www.mobipocket.com

Hello,

First off, I am not sure if this is the right forum for this question but it has to do with a resource so...

Is www.mobipocket.com basically the same as the Amazon Kindle store? I heard that Mobipocket was owned by Amazon, or did I just make that up?

I ask this because if the majority of books on Amazon are available at www.mobipocket.com then that would make it easier to get something other than a Kindle.

Thanks,

Nathan

Yes, Mobipocket is owned by Amazon. And yes, all the books on www.Mobipocket.com are in the Kindle Store (Most, actually. But that has to do with territorial restrictions.)

I still wouldn't buy from that site. It does not have the best prices.

Amazon does own Mobipocket.com. They both sell basically the same content (as far as books are concerned) but use differnt DRM schemes. Books from Mobipocket DO NOT work on the Kindle (without DRM stripping). Kindle books can only be read on the Kindle, iPhone or iPod Touch (unless the DRM is stripped).

Amazon also sells a small number of books in a format called "Topaz" which cannot be stripped of it's DRM (as Sony's LRX format cannot be stripped).

Thanks for the helpful answers!

Can you download from them in the US? What are the territorial restrictions?

A simple search on mobipocket.com found about 105,000 titles and their FAQ says 120,000. Almost all MOBI ebooks at available for the Kindle, but there are about 305,000 total ebooks on the Kindle so many are not at mobipocket.com. With the exception of TOPAZ ebooks, these don't tend to be from major publishers though.

As Nate says, other stores usually sell MOBI ebooks cheaper and Amazon often has the lowest price of all (but you can only buy Kindle ebooks for the Kindle or the iPhone/iTouch). I good site to comparison shop is ebookprice.info.
