Simon & Schuster Signs E-book Deal with Scribd

From http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1244...ml#mod=testMod

Quote:
CBS Corp.'s Simon & Schuster book publishing arm has struck a deal to sell nearly 5,000 digital e-books on Scribd, Inc., a Web site that allows people to post and read documents online. Simon & Schuster said the works of such authors as Stephen King, Mary Higgins Clark, and former President Jimmy Carter will be available for sale on Scribd starting Friday.

More interesting info:
Quote:
The Simon & Schuster titles sold on the Scribd site can be read on a computer and saved as Adobe Acrobat files but can't be printed. The company says those Acrobat files can be read on the Sony's e-book Reader, but not on Amazon's Kindle. Scribd plans to soon release software that will enable the Scribd-purchased books to be read on Apple Inc.'s iPhone. Several thousand Simon & Schuster titles that haven't yet been published as e-books will be available for preview on Scribd via a search-and-browsing option. Readers will be able to buy the print edition of those books from Simon & Schuster directly or from various online retailers.
  • Scribd's iPhone reader app will be available for the iPhone soon. This app will allow searching within S&S pbooks as well.
  • If Scribd's PDFs can be read on the Sony Reader but not the Kindle DX, they've probably adopted Adobe's DRM. Is Adobe's DRM becoming a standard?

Adobe's DRM is a standard, in the sense that it is widely available and has been for years (for PDFs). It is the only DRM scheme for ePub, although FictionWise has talked about eReader DRM for ePubs.

What is interesting about the Scribd store is that it will add Adobe DRM to PDF and ePubs for you (their ePub support is either new or not yet available). I am not a fan of DRM, but this is the only inexpensive way I know of for independent authors to sell DRMed PDFs and ePubs.
