British thieves use Bluetooth to steal laptops

Apparently in the British county of Cambridgeshire, people not only leave their laptops in cars, but they also don't switch them off. A local news article claims that some punks are using Bluetooth scanner devices to detect "valuable electronics, including laptops" inside abandoned cars.

"At about 8.20am last Wednesday, a Sony TR 1MP laptop was taken from an Audi A6 estate parked in Tesco car park off old North Road... We would urge people not to leave laptops, or anything of value, in their cars, and always de-activate these wireless connections when you're not using a laptop - otherwise you're making life easy for the thieves..."

Personally I would've preferred the Audio to the Sony laptop, but that's just me.

Well, there's one good thing we can draw from this... Laptop battery lives are improving if one can leave their laptop on in a car long enough for a thief to steal it.

And a suggestion to anyone doing this - laptops have a sleep/suspend/hibernate mode for a reason. It'd be wise to use it.

The suspend/sleep/hibernate function is set as a default when in battery mode. Probably done deliberately so that they can claim it delivers the better than the other brand's battery life. But perhaps there are other esoteric features on laptops that allows for say, the BT function to work even when in suspend. I mean features like WOR (Wake-up On Ring), WOL (Wake-up On LAN), and so on which increases the promiscuity of a Laptop
