Orwell, George: Burmese Days. v1.1. 18 May 2009
Set in 1920's Burma in the days of the British Empire, Burmese Days is a story of unrequited love fuelled by mutual misunderstanding, against a backdrop of the iniquities of the Imperial system, which traps the British as much as the Burmese into bigotry and hatred.
Not having read Burmese Days until recently, I found it a powerful indictment of the evils of Empire; although one of Orwell's lesser known works, I thoroughly recommend it.
RWood has previously posted an LRF version of Burmese Days, which closely follows the Project Gutenberg text.
This current version has been converted directly from the Project Gutenberg text, with the following enhancements:
Replaced "--" with em-dashes.
Proper use of opening and closing quotes, and apostrophes.
Correct use of italics for emphasised text, instead of CAPITALS.
Some corrections to typos.
I hope you like this version, and please let me know of any corrections.
