I still think Pshrynk has a point.

Q: What's big and gray and comes in quarts?
A: An elephant.

Like the first joke it is just a play on words, but way more funny.

So the sexual spelling of the word is somehow in bad taste?

I'm still fascinated by Brian W. Adiss's novel, "The Dark Light Years," about a race of beings that worships its feces.

Talk about the crap hitting the fan! That novel caused a stir in '64 or '65.

Two quotes from Heinlein.

Quote:
I grok people. I am people… so now I can say it in people talk. I've found out why people laugh. They laugh because it hurts so much… because it's the only thing that'll make it stop hurting.
Quote:
I had thought — I had been told — that a 'funny' thing is a thing of a goodness. It isn't. Not ever is it funny to the person it happens to. Like that sheriff without his pants. The goodness is in the laughing itself. I grok it is a bravery... and a sharing… against pain and sorrow and defeat.

"Stranger in a Strange Land"

Very Excellent Book.

It's scifi written in a tongue in cheek style with profound philosophical views on culture from a few decades ago. Heinlein peers a the human being with intelligence and analysis and seizes on a reality that transcends fashions, the roots of existence.
The story in itself is symplistic but a fantastic basis for an uninterested judgement of humanity. The only failure to me is a certain sexist view that somehow fades when the eyes are from the martian protagonist.

I recommend this book even to people who abhore scifi.

I don't find the quotations very insightful.

And I recently re-read this book thanks to it being available in an E-Book edition. I now have a permanent copy -- assuming that all my hard drives, my Kindle, and Amazon.com don't have a simultaneous melt-down.
