NOT a debate -just a DRM question

I've tried following some DRM threads, but they get pretty heated, so I'm hoping that someone can answer my question. If an ebook is DRM protected, does this mean that I cannot use Calibre to convert it to a different format? I'm on information overload here, and I'm trying to understand how DRM affects me as a consumer. I gather that is used to prevent piracy, but does it also prevent me from, say, ordering a B & N ebook and then converting it to a format that Kindle accepts? Thank you for any understanding you can give me!

DRM will prevent you using an eBook on any other device and that includes conversion with Calibre. You need to remove the DRM before you move it or convert it.

Legally - No.

How do I know? I had a Sony 700, lots of ePubs. I had a "mini-library of bought books with an online ebook seller. I wrote and asked if I could download .mobi versions so I could use the SAME books I bought from them within 60 days or so onto my Kindle 3.

My reply was a very nicely-worded explanation that the store could only allow me to re-download (as much as I wanted) the SAME format only of a book, as a different format would be considered by the publishers a 2nd purchase. The book vendors themselves would be charged a second time.

Does that help? Very frustrating.

Ah, I see. Is there a way to tell if a book is DRM encrypted or not before you buy it?

Yes, most of them are (it says so when you click on "purchase", a little lock on it).

Then you can just "cancel" if you choose to ...

Calibre can't bundle DRM-removal, because writing and hosting DRM-removal software is a "go to jail" crime in the US. In a Catch-22, it isn't necessarily illegal for individuals to use such software if it is for personal use.

There are now stand-alone, and very easy to use, software tools to strip B&N and Adobe and Kindle (K4PC) DRM. Once an ebook is DRM-free, Calibre can format shift and/or edit metadata and/or fix typos in the ebook. A good place to read about the state of play in DRM issues is Apprentice Alf's Blog.

In the case of K4PC, the simplest DRM-removal tool is a plug in to Calibre. This makes it almost transparent to buy AZW's from Amazon and format shift them via Calibre for an ePub device. This is a work around for the DRM-stripping laws, because the plug in is written by a 3rd party and isn't provided with Calibre.

That's not actually correct, the act of breaking "digital locks" is illegal regardless of what the intent is. I'm not saying I like DRM or agree with it, just trying to clarify the info given to the OP.

Not, for example, in the case of explicit anti-circumvention exemptions, where it definitely is legal to break the locks but it is still illegal to write the software to do so. In the case of other fair uses, the law is less clear and has never been tested in federal court against an individual.

No, you are wrong. Remember, this is an international forum, so laws are different in the different countries.

In 2005 a new section was added to the "copuright law" in Norway that forbid any circumvention of "digital copy protection", though in the very next section this again says: "The provision in the first paragraph shall not preclude the private user adoption of legally acquired works on what is generally regarded as relevant players." (Google Translate, but it makes a very accurate translation).

When interpreted by the lawyers, it was concluded that any or none had the full right to circumvent any digital restrictions *for personal use*.

Before I bought my Kindle I never bought a DRM's book, I only bought multi format books from Fictionwise and DRM free books from some small online sellers. Now I have my Kindle I have bought 100's of books from Amazon, I am just hoping i am never in the situation of having to move to a non Amazon reader!
