Page numbers in iphone vs Real Kindle

Do these line up in any convertible way? See it would be really cool to read on a kindle, pick up on the iphone then pick back up on the kindle. This works IF you have Amazon purchased ebooks. But I have like 500+ Non-Amazon books, and I have an iphone, but if I got a Kindle 2, Whispersync wouldn't work with any of my existing books.

Any alternative solutions to this? I'm guessing the pages numbers would be off since the screen sizes are vastly different. If couldn't find someway to switch off between the two reasonably well, there would be no reason to get a Kindle 2 really.

The kindle uses location numbers. So location 1234 should be the same on both readers.

Kindle uses location numbers, not page numbers, so that the same location works regardless of screen size or font size or formatting concerns.

Oh that is good news! I just noticed that changing font sizes on the iphone doesn't really affect the location numbers that much, but I didn't know about the Kindle as I don't have one. That wouldn't be so bad then, the only problem being the iPhone app can't flip to an exact location number, you have to jump around to it.

Now there's a potential killer app for the iPhone .... a Kindle bookmarks sync program.

See what I was wondering is if you hacked the header of a prc to be one of the titles that is in the Amazon store, would it then sync it between the two devices? Is it based on the title being in the store or the DRM? It would be sweet to hack this capability to work with non-amazon books, as I doubt Amazon cares to add this feature as it encourages reading of books not obtained from them.

If it works on non-DRM books then I think they use the reader specific meta data that is available in the MobiPocket format. You can alwaye use mobi2mobi to look at this data and try to change thing until you notice that the synchronization have stopped working.

Um, I think this wouldn't work, palex. I was just reading in another thread how an out-of-copyright book from the Mobileread boards was freezing up someone's iPhone when she was trying to read it with the Kindle app for iPhone.

I think you'd have to obtain the book from Amazon itself for this to work. Some out of copyright books have Kindle versions available free there, but apparently not all of them.

The link doesn't show up in the Preview, so here it is "naked" http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41483

Sigh... When Amazon creates a sync service, they are adding value to the books that they are selling. Would you please stop trying to rip Amazon off by using their server and cpu time to sync books not bought from Amazon? It is one thing if Amazon offers it but if you are modding your book headers to trick the current program to waste Amazon cpu time... That's lame.

Well I don't think Amazon's CPU is going to buckle over me syncing a few books not bought by them. But you are right, it would probably just be easier to use the location numbers. I'm doing Amazon a favor, if I can find a good system, I'll buy a Kindle...

I wrote the other thread about the locking up. Apparently Amazon iphone app locks on TEXt REAd books, but not on proper MOBI books. So it will let you read non-amazon books... but the whole non-syncing does kind of suck.

It seems to me that amazon is ignoring the fact that people will use their Kindles with content NOT from the Kindle store. They should see this as an opportunity to provide this service. I have been saying since day 1 with my Kindle that I would be willing to pay to be able to add my own content to my media library.

I think either tie it to my S3 account... or go with some Flickr like annual membership price which I think is $25 a year.

That said, how much "CPU" time are we really talking about here? Probably less than it takes for me to log into my Kindle account and browse the store and not buy any thing. Am I ripping Amazon off when I browse in their store and then don't end up buying the item?

I dont think there is a problem with you doing what you are doing. If amazon was really that worried, i'm sure they could combat the issue

To pilotbob:

If you are willing to pay for this service, that's another story. Suggest that to kindle2-feedback [at] amazon.com Your counter argument on not buying a book after browsing the store is not valid, Amazon will take into the cost of bandwidth used by your browsing as part of the cost do online business. But an earlier comment regarding tricking the Amazon to sync Last Page Read on books that are not from the Kindle store is so malicious. Why are you getting a free ride on people who are buying books from Amazon to subsidizes those who are not. Someone out there trying to run a business by providing its customer value added services, others must come along to stick it to the man to say, "I know I can just get a free ride".... Where is the integrity?

To KindleKat:
I think most devs would say they rather develop something useful the users then go spend time to play cat-mouse game with hackers. However, those devs are being employed do participate in a sound business. All these hacking on Amazon services are a cost to the infrastructure investment. That's why every time more hacking is done, more development time ends up to prevent hacking. At the end, the legitimate users suffer from not getting the updates the dev would have otherwise developed.

Eh a little hacking never hurt anyone. This theoretical method I suggested doesn't even work at the moment anyways. I bought an Amazon book, and had a PD book of the same title and only the Amazon book successfully synced with the server. I'm sure its more complicated than just title/author anyways though. The way I see it, Amazon can either add functionality or I'll find ways to add functionality for them.

Moral of the story is, Amazon needs to stop being so closed and open up a little. This lack of syncing for all books between the two devices is the only thing really keeping me from ordering a Kindle this very moment.
