Post Rockwell, Carey: Tom Corbett Omnibus (Illustrated). v4. 26 Feb 2013

An omnibus edition of the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet series. These stories were immensely popular in the USA in the 1950s, appearing on television, radio, books, comic books, comic strips, coloring books, punch-out books and View-Master reels. The stories followed the adventures of Tom Corbett, Astro, and Roger Manning, cadets at the Space Academy as they train to become members of the elite Solar Guard. The action takes place at the Academy in classrooms and bunkroom, aboard their training ship the rocket cruiser Polaris, and on alien worlds, both within our solar system and in orbit around nearby stars.

The books in this volume are:
  • Stand By For Mars! (1952)
  • Danger in Deep Space (1953)
  • On the Trail of the Space Pirates (1953)
  • The Space Pioneers (1953)
  • The Revolt on Venus (1954)
  • Treachery in Outer Space (1954)
  • Sabotage in Space (1955)

There is a final book in the series, The Robot Rocket (1956) which is still under copyright protection, and hence not included in the omnibus. All the books are copiously illustrated, hence the large file size.

This is a wonderful series. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Note that several books in the series have been posted previously as separate books, but I wanted to create an ombinus edition of them all in one volume.

EDIT: 11 Feb 09

Corrected the author's name (which is a fictitious "house name") from "Corey Rockwell" to "Carey Rockwell". Made some minor formatting improvements, such as moving a "commercial" for the series from the end of one of the books in the middle of the volume to the very end of the volume. Uploaded v2.

EDIT: 7 Mar 09

Thoroughly proof-read, and many minor errors corrected as a result. Uploaded v3.

EDIT: 26 Feb 13

Dramatically improved the formatting. Converted to "curly quotes". Uploaded v4.

You know Harry, you outdid yourself on this one. Beautiful job! I just downloaded to glance at and and was surprised to find out how much I enjoyed reading it. Blast it, now I'm on chapter 10. This is really a great read!

Thank you for allowing me to discover the wonders of Tom Corbett!!

It IS a fun series, isn't it? I'd not come across it before I created this book, but I think it's great! There's a final book in the series called "The Robot Rocket" which, unfortunately, is still under copyright protection and hence not included in the omnibus.

This is terrific. The Tom Corbett books were a childhood favorite of mine, and I still like to reread them once in a while. I'd been hunting around for well-formatted versions (lots of badly formatted copies out there), and this was great to find--with all of the illos, which are still fun to look at. Thanks!

BTW, the author's real name was Joseph Lawrence Greene. It had been a mystery to me for most of my life. Then, one day, years ago, I was chatting with Tom Doherty of Tor, and I asked him--because he'd worked at Grosset & Dunlap much earlier in his career. He scratched his head for a minute or two, and finally said, "Wasn't it Joe Greene? Yeah, it was Joe Greene." Eventually the background got filled in, and now you can read all about it on Wikipedia.

I just thought I'd bump this up so other people would see it. I saw a post about Tom Swift, and after downloading them, I immediately thought of the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet books I read when I was a kid. Great books, and I can't wait to re-read them!

Thanks for bumping this, shootingMaNs. I'll look forward to checking this out.

Harry, do you know why these are out of copyright except the last one? They are fairly recent.

The others did not have their copyright renewed. The last one (for whatever reason) did.

The last one is easy enough to find, should one wish to read it. It doesn't bring the series to any kind of conclusion, though; unfortunately it just "stops".
