HTC Planning Black Friday Launch of Chrome Tablet

More details are emerging about a Chrome OS tablet set to launch for the 2010 holiday season. If the reports are accurate, HTC, Google, and Verizon are working together to launch a Chrome OS tablet on Black Friday to kick off the holiday shopping season.

Probably already posted, but didn't see it with a quick scan.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is supposedly one of the biggest single-day sales days of the year (I've read its actually not, though). It is called Black Friday because it is also supposedly when many retailers actually make a profit for the year, i.e. go from red to black ink on the ledger.

Just for the record, it used to be the day when retailers would go into the black. These days that's not necessarily true (most are in the black all year), but it's still the biggest shopping day by far and some crazy deals are always to be had on Black Friday. Especially when the economy sucks the way it does now, expect some insane door buster deals so that retailers can still get people in the door.

It'll be interesting to see all the tablets that come out in the next few months. I'm still sort of looking forward to the Adam but they blew it by not getting it out sooner and now will end up lumped with all the others that come out for the holidays. The hard part will be in weeding out the ones that got released too soon just to get a piece of the action.

I always thought it was called that because that was the mood everyone was in by noon!

It seems weird that HTC would choose to launch on such a busy day, that would waste their first day rush on a day that was busy already, seems far more likely that their target is to get it in the shops before black friday.

One of the advantages of the iPad is that you don't have to repurchase the apps you may have had on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The iPad can run the current apps. They didn't flat out say that Android apps will not be compatible but I get the impression that it's likely the case since Chrome is a different OS. I hope it isn't since there's already a nice body of work in the Android market. People won't buy it without a wide variety of apps in place.

I refer to it as Black because of the shopping experience here in Orlando. People have been trampled to death at Walmart here on 'Black' Friday.

Some companies have tried cheering up the day, by calling it "Green Friday" and things like that. It is a gloomy day for people who have to work on it, plus most of the shopping is done while it is still dark out. This past year, I started shopping at midnight, napped for two hours, and was done before 7am after hitting several stores.
