Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) stammte aus einer evangelischen Pfarrersfamilie, besuchte die renommierte Landesschule in Pforta bei Naumburg, studierte in Bonn und Leipzig und wurde mit 25 Jahren Professor der klassischen Philologie in Basel. Er war ein genialer Denker, Meister der Sprache und begabter Musiker und Komponist. Sein Leben war bestimmt von problematischen Beziehungen, etwa zu Richard Wagner oder Lou Andreas-Salomé, und endete in der bedrückenden Einsamkeit des Wahnsinns.

Durch den "Umsturz aller Werte" sollte, so Nietzsche, ein neues Menschentum entstehen. In seinem 1883 veröffentlichten Hauptwerk "Also sprach Zarathustra" wird Philosophie zur Dichtung.

Nietzsche selbst bezeichnete "Also sprach Zarathustra" als "das tiefste Buch, das die Menschheit besitzt". In ihm finden sich wichtige Motive der Philosophie Nietzsches: der "Tod Gottes", der schon in der Fröhlichen Wissenschaft verkündet wurde sowie zum ersten Mal der „Übermensch“ und der „Wille zur Macht“. Nietzsche zufolge ist der Hauptgedanke des Zarathustra aber die Lehre der ewigen Wiederkunft, nach der alles Geschehen sich schon unendlich oft wiederholt hat und noch unendlich oft wiederholen wird.
