Depends on user. I actually never used memory cards on my PRS-505, only using 50-70 megs of storage for the 40-60 books I keep at any given moment on the device. Whenever battery is low, I hook it up to the PC and while charging I remove the ones I read and upload some new.

I second this. I only use up at the most 30% of my memory at any given time.

The same here. Never used expamsion slots. More than a half or internal memory is free.

I often update my SD card by inserting that into my pc. I have a card reader in it. It's usually faster than figuring out where I left that cable...

And I carry my entire ebook library on my SD card (the only drawback is the lack of organizational skills of MobiPocket Reader...)

That is what I do as well.

Plus my wife and I share books, and we just exchange the card that has what book we want rather than having multiple copies of stuff.

Can you do that if you're Readers aren't registered on the same account? My mom and I both have 505s but are on separate accounts.

My memory usually is half full on the PRS-505.
Sometimes I use an additional 25% for testing purposes (to test some books).

The memory goes fuller the more PDF files you use, pictures you add,and music you add.
LRF files on themselves are usually around 1MB in size. PDF files are much larger.

Not if they are Sony .LRX books. Time to break away from that Vendor lock in. Learn to deDRM and convert. Then you could share books with your mom much more easily.

We don't have any books bought from Sony.

Neither do I, because those outside the USA/Canada cannot purchase from Sony in any case. I buy mostly from Fictionwise, but can only access .pdf or multiformat, which severely cuts down the choice. Most of the good books are only in the secure format, which is very frustrating.

why not buy secure Microsoft Reader (LIT format) and remove the drm using convertLit ? from there you can use calibre to convert to epub. that is what i do when there is a book that i really want which is only available with drm. i've never bought a book from sony either.
