Also it looks like all the geek boys are excited over the one they showed at CES, only problem is the price.

The Vaio line has always been nice looking. But, price wise you can always find a similar device for quite a bit less money. And I mean brand name stuff like HP and Dell, not Vizio or Tatung. (Not that I have anything against off name brands, they do have their place)

nothing revolutionary there from sony, pretty much worthless, not even slightly inventive in any way. I think that hp (although I am a mac guy) netbook, the new one, with the amd mobile core going against the atom, now that's a lovely machine

you mean the mini 2133 ?

The VAIO P is for me a wonderful device and even if it's not a "revolution", it's the first "netbook" which looks good. Everything is neat with this machine, the only drawback (if we except the price of course) is Vista which is not appropriate with this kind of notebook.

No, it's a very new machine I am talking about, just released, the name escapes me, but look for hp with the new amd ultra mobile core (bobcat codename but they aren't using it officialy). I agree with you, it does look good, but to market it as a "revolution" is nothing short of a joke. Plus, and most importantly it runs vista, this by itself ruins the deal. If they want to be taken seriously sony they should go the apple way and get some linux codebase and an os of their own on top, having vista, or windows 7, or whatever crap from redmond is to a lot of people nowadays a spoiler to the deal.

Btw, that trackstick in the middle they have that reminds me of one of my first toshiba lappies ten years ago, is so, so sweet, the trackbad caught on, but this was the much better implementation for sure (lenovo and someothers still carry it), nice to see it making a come back for reasons of space. But as soon as I see that awful black vista toolbar...I cringe immediately....like I said, you wanna sell a netbook for $1000, make your own os sony.

Well perhaps it is a spoiler for you but netbooks started with Linux base and even today the Linux version is at least $50 cheaper and yet the windows version out sells them. I guess that everyone must not agree with you. The unit does not meet the criteria for Microsoft to allow XP so vista is the only choice currently for the larger share of the market.

what are the criteria to install XP ? i didn't realize it had to be allowed by MS, i thought it was a manufacturer choice.

is this case it's 1Gb of RAM. The Sony P has 2Gb, so they have to sell Vista with it instead of XP. Plus, Sony doesn't seem so keen on Linux... *sighs*

MS can set the terms for who they will sell the OEM version of Windows XP to. They only sell it now to machines under a certain spec. But, I think this is a stop gap measure, because their plan is for Windows 7 to be able to run on these lower power machines. And from reports I have heard from folks that have installed it on their netbooks it is running just fine on them... and it is still beta.

It is not only Microsoft but also Intel's choice. Microsoft restricts the unit to max 10.2" screen, 1 Gig or RAM (as shipped), 1024x600 pixel display, no graphic accelerator beyond a certain level, and Intel restricts the ATOM N270 1.6 GHz processor to the same criteria for a netbook.

Dale I am sure you are aware that most users choosing windows over linux is not a matter of taste but rather a fear of the incompatibilities and the learning curve for linux, both of which are unwarranted. So it's not a matter if they agree or not with me, as it's been the case for so long, they had no real choice to begin with. I 've witnessed time and again how people can get scared away by it people or salespeople from any other platform than windows.

This thing with vista and intel integrated graphics (by far the worst in the x86 bussiness) and the terrible, terrible atom is going to be one slow, slow dog...

The only reason that is happening is because vista bombed and ms had to have something for the netbook market, so they reversed their decision to stop selling xp and added the "sell xp but with clause such and such blah blah" option. Because they knew that they didn't have anything good enough other than xp but they also had to stop the sales of xp in other markets because they would never be able to push vista that nobody wanted it in any otherway. Pretty pathetic stuff...

that's the real revolutionary crossover netbook/notebook by amd and hp, I was talking about here, with a cpu that puts the atom to shame, and are nearing c2d speeds with way lower tdps, crackling radeon graphics so you can get some real work done too...and unfortunately sh.ity windows or some good but not great foss alternative like ubuntu (no os x...)...won't be out until march/april, hope the ressecion doesn't affect sales...doesn't it look great too, besides the specs? This 12.1 led backlit screen will let you get some serious work done too...and guess what it's 2/3 and less the price of the sony that runs that awful, awful dog of a cpu known as the atom (in years to come people are going to look at the atom as one of the greatest depravities and fast cash in flops of the decade when the new ultra low power high efficiency cpus start kicking in like the arm cortex) which with vista on man is it gonna suck.
