Marshall, John: The Life of George Washington (Vol 1 of 5). 26 Nov 2008
The story of the "Father of the Country" written by the longest serving Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, John Marshall. Compiled from original papers of George Washington's it is perhaps the first of many great works written about GW. Written at a time when GW had already passed from flesh to legend and was turning into myth. In many ways this book provided the roadmap for many later scholars to start their studies of GW and helps us today to understand that he was a person standing at a crossroads of history.
Written by one Virginian about another Virginian (and I too am a Virginian, by birth and by choice), the book is a labor of love by a man who cared greatly for his newly founded nation. Many did not expect this "American Experiment" to succeed and at times it almost did not succeed.
Now over 200 years later we still face many of the same issues that they grappled with then -- What are the duties of a national government? How much power should a central government have and how much power should be reserved for the state and local governments? How do we protect the rights of each citizen?
