I'll gladly second that. One of the funniest books I've ever read.

I'll second or third as the case may be, the following:

Dracula
The Time Machine

I'd also like to suggest one of the Sherlock Holmes books.

Seem to be mostly Brit books so far.

I'd love to see some classic suggestions from other countries. My horizons need broadening!

The first four books from the Sherlock Holmes series would be great.........drama without the 'angst' of Dickens or Bronte Sisters.

Thanks sparrow for that. I've downloaded it (thanks Patricia!) and will read it straight away, whether it wins the poll or not.

Please, no Three men in a Boat. It's too dry and if it wins, it will ruin the book club. We already are doing dry with A passage to India. Something fun and not dry s what we need next.

three men in a boat, too dry ??? have you actually read it ??? that book is hilarious !! i giggle nonstop whenever i read it ! if you want a classic, fun and not dry book to read, that would be at the top of my list of recommendations.

i'm not participating, of course, so i *won't* nominate anything, but i do think you should possibly give that book another chance, for your own benefit. seriously, it's "roll-on-the-floor-laughing" funny.

So... they are comming fast and furious now. I see three nominations now to:

Three Men in a Boat - Jerome K Jerome
Augustus Carp Esquire, by Himself: Being the Autobiography of a Really Good Man

John... rules is rules. You of course do not have to vote for "Three Men..."

"Red Badge of Courage"

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"

"The Iliad"

If we're going for "a" Sherlock Holmes book then, IMHO, the best possible choice is "The Hound of the Baskervilles". Widely regarded as Conan Doyle's best book it represent Holmes (and Watson) at their finest.

I second (third?) Hound of the Baskervillles.
I've seen the film half a dozen times and the ending still takes me by surprise!

BTW: Voting procedure. I was thinking once we got our ten or got to the end of the nominations period that the poll would allow for multiple selections but we would ask that each person vote for up to 2 selections.

Thoughts?

BOb

BTW: So far Hounds of Baskervilles and Time Machine will probably be the two I vote for.
