Am I using Mobipocket Creator correctly?

When you have an HTML file with a cover and other images, are you supposed to set it up like this?

Cover Image
HTML file
Rest of images

?

Are you actually supposed to put the images there yourself or it imports them automatically for you because of the links in the HTML file as long as they are in the same folder? The cover itself has to be put in manually right?

Thanks!

You don't need to explicitly add images referenced in the HTML -- Mobipocket Creator will add them in by itself, so long as the links resolve correctly (i.e. point to the image file they should)

The cover image doesn't have to be referenced from the HTML, but should be set up using the Cover Image tab.

If you're unsure, try things and see how the result comes out.

If the HTML references an image that is on the Internet and your machine is connected to the Internet, will it resolve correctly or must the images be local?

I noticed the cover I have to add manually, but since I don't know where the images are in the books, it's hard to tell that it's doing it correctly.

So yes to cover images, no to everything. Thanks!

Image references must be local.

I have tried to do this but without success. The .gif files are in the same folder as the html file that references them. So, I don't have an address for each image. Do I need one? If so, what would that address look like?

For example:

<img src="night_hunt_kb.gif" />

<mbp: pagebreak />

<img src="free_kittens_kb.gif" />

<mbp: pagebreak />

(I added a space between the : and p in the pagebreak tags to avoid getting smilies.)

In that case, you should simply have to place the image files in the same folder as the HTML file that references them, and all should be well.

Are you getting any build errors from Mobi Creator?

That was my understanding. But when I do that and try to build the ebook in MPC, I get a warning message for each img file, saying the file could not be found.

I've read somewhere that sometimes having the folder too many layers in creates problems. Haven't tried shortening the string of folders.

Harry T is certainly an authority on this subject, see his Mobipocket Creation Tutorial. However, I occasionally use the program in creating e-books that contain many images and maybe if I tell you what I'm doing, you can compare it to what is happening to you.

I format my books using Book Designer, which creates an HTML file with the images imbedded. After loading the HTML file into Mobipocket Creator, and providing the metadata, I then go to the original HTML file and copy each image from that into the folder with the book that Mobipocket Creator is creating.

If there's an easier way of doing the job, I don't know of it. If you have so many images that that sounds like an onerous job, maybe Harry will be able to help you tomorrow during his daytime.

I never was successful with getting MPC to find the .gif images that are in the same folder as the html file. But I did find a solution I can live with that eliminates the repeated images.

As you know, when you build a book, MPC creates a folder to put the .prc and opc files into, along with the html file. Because during the build process it couldn't find the image files, none of them was in that folder (except, of course, the cover image, which I had imported through MPC).

So, instead of trying to drag and drop the files with MPC opened, I went to Windows Explorer and simply copied and pasted them from where they are stored into the same folder that the prc, etc. files are in. Then, still in Windows Explorer, I clicked on the opc file, which opened MPC, and I built the book again.

That seemed to do it. Everything appears to be working fine, and there are no extra images at the end of the book.

Hope this little exercise will help anyone having the same problem.

Yes, you have to copy the image files manually into the folder containing the HTML file that references them. That's what I said in post #9 above. Mobi Creator certainly won't copy them for you!

Begging your pardon. I thought the images had to be in the same folder that I originally created, which also contained the html file; not in the folder that MPC creates during the build. I assumed MPC would go to that original folder and copy the image files into the new one. Not all that far-fetched of an assumption. Programs do that all the time.

At any rate, I solved the problem; that's the main thing. Chalk it up to a newbie misunderstanding, I guess.

An easy misunderstanding to make. Anyway, good to hear that it's now all working for you.
