Oprah's Kindle Discount - $50 Off

As you may know, there has been a rumor floating around that Oprah Winfrey would announce the Kindle as her new favorite gadget. That is indeed what she did today, 24 October, on her show.

In partnership with Amazon, she also announced a coupon code (for $50) you can type in when you buy the Kindle. Since the code is available to anyone who looks at her website, I will repeat it here:

OPRAHWINFREY

The code will expire on 1 November 2008.

Nice... I'm almost tempted to buy another Kindle. Is there a limit to how many times you can use this? I have been trying to talk my 3 siblings into getting my Mom a Kindle for Christmas... I know it is a device she will be able to use.

I may just have to buy the thing myself.

You get a Kindle, you get a Kindle, and you, and you and you... everyone gets a Kindle.

See Oprah to redeem this offer.

I just inspired someone to purchase one for her parents holiday gift. The discount was icing on the cake.

With the $50 discount you can now buy a Kindle for the price of a Sony. Perhaps Sony will offer a 1 week discount to match.

What I would really like to know -- ultimately -- is how many of the Oprah Kindle buyers actually will continually buy books rather than buying the Kindle as a doorstop.

The Kindle is way too light for a doorstop. I would think (guess) that anyone receiving the Kindle who is not a reader would "re-gift" it to someone who is.

It sure would be nice if folks could look at this as a good thing for ebook readers and not as an opportunity to bash the Kindle.

Isn't that credit card special still on? (Was it the Amazon card?) If so, could you combine these offers... was it $150... so $200 off would be like getting the Kindle for less than half price.

As I recall the $150 credit card offer is from Sony, although Amazon may have one also but as I remember is was $30.
