The original biography of Charles Dickens, written soon after his death by his close friend, John Forster. This massive work, although ignoring many less admirable aspects of Dickens' life, is the definitive source upon which all the (many) subsequent biographies of Dickens have been based.

An absolutely fascinating book for anyone who enjoys Dickens' work.

Glad to see this now available from Gutenburg. When you were producing your editions of Dickens a year or so ago, I looked for this and found it in HTML form, but on a site in Japan, of all things. Dickens Society of Japan or some such. Sent the person who had jurisdiction over it an email asking for permission to use it and never got a reply.

Wonder if they used his version or if someone started from scratch.

I found that one too, Jim, and like you, I e-mailed the person without reply. This PG version is much better, with all the illustrations and 300+ footnotes; the version in Japan doesn't have those.
