Finally got myself a reader but Calibre not recognizing it...

Hi.

I finally picked up a reader. I got a PRS-500 used, locally. It has the latest firmware installed and is empty of all books, etc. I am running Linux version 0.4.89. The device knows it's plugged in as it says as much on the screen of the reader but Linux does not seem to be recognizing it. It there something more I need to do other than install linux? Do I have to install a driver? When I run the prs500 program I get this:

Code:
kevin ~/builds/calibre/pkg/usr $ prs500 info
Unable to find a connected ebook reader.
Any ideas? I am itching to try out my new reader and don't want to have to resort to using the Windows. :-(

Thanks,

Kevin

Ok... what do you mean when you say that? Do you mean you can't see it in the Linux file browsers (i forgot the name of it)? If so, that's expected. Does it show up in calibre at the top of the screen next to the library icon?

See attached image.

No, on the screen of the reader itself it says USB plugged in, that's all I meant. Sorry for the confusion.

Kovid,

I will try reinstalling calibre after work tonight, it's possible that the post_install didn't run correctly.

Thanks,

Kevin

Are all those messages normal? Just wanted to be sure. I can't check to see if it fixed my problem until I get home later tonight but thought those error messages looked odd.

Thanks again,

Kevin

THey're not normal, but they're not the reason for your problem either. Check to make sure that the file 95-calibre.rules exists in your system udev directory. Also check to make sure that the file 10-calibre.fdi exists in your system HAL directory. Also try a reboot.

Thanks Kovid, Both the files mentioned do exist in their proper places. I made some slight modifications to the Udev(my distro has/had a bug relates to Udev rules) rule to see if it helps, I am still at work though and unable to test, will update once I am home.

Thanks again,

Kevin

Use lshal to check if the device is known to HAL. calibre uses HAL to get device information.

Make sure the directories Data/media/books exists on the device.
Use
Code:
prs500 ls
prs500 mkdir
to check.

Thanks agian Kovid, you rock! The books folder was missing for some reason and the mkdir command worked fine.
