The Sony eBook Store has the recent textbook Sport, Culture and Society: An Introduction by Grant Jarvie right now for $0.01. This text sells at Amazon for $190 (used or new), and the Kindle version is $45.

Is there any way to read their books without the actual sony ereader hardware?

They've had free books before, but I didn't bother, as I could not see any way to read them.

This includes an emulators, so that you can read the book on your computer.
(Click the little square at the bottom of the screen and you get a very nice double-page view.)

Thanks Patricia - that worked (after a couple of retries at the Sony end to create an account - for those interested, you can skip the billing info setup, so you don't have to give them your CC# right away) and I was able to download this week's freebie. Looks like they will be giving a book away every week this month.
