Virgil: The Aeneid, Tr. J.W.Mackail. v1, 30 July 2008
Virgil's "Aeneid" is the classic story of the fall of Troy, and the subsequent wanderings and struggles of Aeneas, leading ultimately to the founding of Rome. An instant "classic" from the time it was written c. 19 BC.
This 1885 prose translation by J.W.Mackail is very close indeed to the original Latin and is an excellent "crib" for those people who (like me) wish to read the Latin version but appreciate the occasional bit of help with the "difficult bits". A prose translation can get a lot closer to the meaning of the original than the many poetry translations that have been made, where inevitably the demands of the poetry get in the way of direct translation.
