Sony has announced that its Reader - a portable device designed to store and display electronic books - will be available to pre-order from tomorrow. Devices will be fully available from September.

Customers will be able to pre-order their Sony Reader from www.sonystyle.co.uk or bookstore Waterstones from tomorrow.

Pricing for the device had yet to be confirmed when the announced of the UK launch of the device was made today.

They also make a mention of downloading books directly in addition to USB...
PCAdvisor has a picture of a 500 not a 505. Please ignore the photo. It will be the 505 and not the 500 being sold in the UK.

When you plug the 505 to the USB port, it is seen as a mass storage device. So you can have the eBooks downloaded directly to the 505 as though it was just another disk drive hooked to the computer.

Something more from the UK Faq:

3. When will Reader be available to buy?
Sony Reader will be available to buy in the UK from the Sony Style online store; Waterstones.com; over 200 High Street Waterstone’s stores and other selected electronic retailers from early September 2008, but you can reserve your own Reader now.

4. Can I pre-order a Reader?
Yes, you can reserve your own Reader from the Sony Style online store. As soon as the stock comes in we’ll send you your Reader, along with a CD-ROM featuring 100 classic eBooks to help you start your collection and a £5 voucher off Reader accessories. The product can also be pre-ordered at waterstones.com

15. What type of memory cards can I use in Reader? What sizes of memory cards are supported?
Reader supports a Memory Stick Duo™ of up to 16 GB, that’s roughly around 13 000 typical books. It also supports SD memory cards . It is important to note that Reader does not accept the “full sized” type of memory sticks or adapters. [comment: I didn't even know 16 GB Memory Sticks exist. Who on earth would want to carry 16 GB worth of e-books around??? ]

Yep, see what you mean, to me it still read as over the air, but reading Sonys site it does specifically say the 505, oh well, perhaps if it's cheap enough I could upgrade my 500

woot, I'm so happy to finally have this confirmed...and I've had my PRS500 for close to 18 months now

Still, nice to finally be able to use a UK site to buy my books, I can stop swapping my waterstones vouchers for cash to fund my paypal transfers to the states to get gift codes

I wonder if the Waterstones ebook site will just be a rebadged sony connect site or if it's going to be completely new?

only a few weeks to find out

I assume it's going to be something new. From the FAQ I posted above:

Quote:
7. Are there "new release" titles available on eBook? How good is the selection of eBooks available online?

Yes you can, Waterstone’s have a huge range of eBooks available online. Covering every genre there is something for everyone, including all the top titles, best sellers and new releases in business, fiction and non-fiction. In fact there’ll initially be around 25 000 top titles to choose from on Waterstones.com, which will be added to all the time.

8. How much will each eBook cost?

Much the same price as normal paperbacks, but don’t just take our word for it, take a look at the range of eBooks on offer on Waterstones.com/eBooks.

US PRS-505 in the UK?

So how do people go around "legalising" their US Ereaders?

Will this be possible!

Just a thought, AndiR

My guess is you will need to download the UK version of the eBook Library software and authorise the Reader with it.

In ePUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

from here:

Waterstone's said that it was expecting that "tens of thousands" of e-books would be available by September, with publishers currently converting their titles into the .epub format, which can be used on the Sony Reader. The e-books will be available for purchase from waterstones.com.

It might also be the case that publishers deliver epub files to Sony or Waterstones who then convert them to BBeB. The Sony's product page doesn't have a single mention of epub, but then again the BBeB/LRF is also not mentioned...
