OpenInkpot (open source ebook firmware)

http://www.openinkpot.org/wiki/ProgressOfWenjieGsoc

What will this mean for us Sony owners? (Sony PRS-505)...should be backward compatible with the 500 series as well.

If it comes to fruition it will be excellent. I have high hopes because of the excellent progress thus far. Epub-capable firmware from Sony is looking more and more like an empty promise, so OpenInkPot could be our best hope.

JFYI: we're collecting funds to buy 505s for a core team to make sure Sony is supported by OpenInkpot.

I tried out the OpenInkpot software on my BeBook and the openInkpot guys are doing and awesome job. Mobipocket books look way better (and a lot more options) using their software than on the not-so-great BeBook sofware.

I think they'll do an awesome job if they do 505 stuff too. Great work guys!

You think other than running the Openinkpot OS from SD card, it is possible to replace the internal OS of the reader or other electronic readers (like eg: the Hanlin)?

If I had any pennies left I'd definately fund you guys, but at the moment things are a bit tight... let's say RED (And that's not so good )

Should be possible.

It will be a tiny bit more dangerous than on V3 - it is nearly impossible to corrupt reflasher on V3, because it is in NOR flash, which is not accessed by the firmware in any way, while Sony has the second Linux (for reflashing) in the same NAND flash, so serious bug may result in bricking which can be fixed only by adding a serial console. Anyway, useful variant to implement.

Wouldn't the Sony update tool recover the unit?
