Hitler's Atlantic Wall by Anthony Saunders
Free at Amazon US | Amazon CA | Amazon UK (possibly more Amazon stores, I didn't check)
Quote:
It was designed as the ultimate defense of Hitler's Thousand-Year Reich.

A wall that would secure the Nazi empire from invasion.

Fortifications are often impressive in their sheer size and strength, but the breadth of the monolithic battlements that make up Hitler’s Atlantic Wall is incredible.

Millions of tonnes of steel-reinforced concrete was poured into tens of thousands of defences along nearly 3,000 miles of European coastline, in a project which involved countless workers.

The structures they built were so massive that many still survive today despite vigorous attempts to demolish them.

This is the first history and guide to the wall to be written in English, and examines the reasons behind its construction.

Hitler conceived the Atlantic Wall as a line of impregnable defences to protect his newly conquered empire from the inevitable onslaught of Allied attack. Bunkers, gun emplacements, flak batteries, radar stations and observation posts were rapidly built to form this remarkable barrier.

France was thought to be most vulnerable to invasion from sea, so the crucial parts of the wall were built along the Channel and Atlantic coasts.

By the time of the Allied assault in June 1944, more than 700 batteries alone had been built in less than two years. Many of the fortifications saw fierce battles, as Allied soldiers faced the difficult task of taking individual bunkers by direct assault.

Anthony Saunders examines the French positions in detail, describing what was built and how, the fighting that took place at each one, and presents a comprehensive guide to what remains of the sites today.

‘Hitler’s Atlantic Wall’ is an authoritative and informative account which serves as a guide for tourist and enthusiast alike, while shedding light on an often overlooked aspect of the Second World War that had important consequences for both the Allies and Germany.

Anthony Saunders is the author of ‘Weapons of the Trench War 1914-1918’ and ‘Dominating the Enemy 1914-1918’. He worked in the Principal Directorate of Patents, at the Ministry of Defence, for six years. He is now a freelance writer and editor with a specialist interest in the two world wars.

Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

Massive Kindle Markdown on an Inspirational Story of a Navy SEAL

The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader. By Jason Redman; John Bruning. Rated 5 stars from 195 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $26.99; Kindle price now $1.99. http://www.amazon.com/Trident-Forgin...vy+SEAL+Leader.

Book Description
There already are many books on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. There will be more, including by those who experienced the fire of combat. This story, though, is not just about a SEAL on the Iraqi battlefield, but a SEAL at war with himself and his ultimate victory. I believe his story will inspire the reader, just as it did me.
—from the introduction by Robert M. Gates, former US Secretary of Defense

Decorated US Navy SEAL lieutenant Jason Redman served his country courageously and with distinction in Colombia, Peru, Afghanistan, and Iraq, where he commanded mobility and assault forces. He conducted over forty capture/kill missions with his men in Iraq, locating more than 120 al-Qaida insurgents. But his journey was not without supreme challenges—both emotional and physical. Redman is brutally honest about his struggles to learn how to be an effective leader, yet that effort pales beside the story of his critical wounding in 2007 while leading a mission against a key al-Qaida commander. On that mission his team was ambushed and he was struck by machine-gun fire at point-blank range.

During the intense recovery period that followed, Redman gained national attention when he posted a sign on his door at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, warning all who entered not to "feel sorry for [his] wounds." His sign became both a statement and a symbol for wounded warriors everywhere.

From his grueling SEAL training to his search for a balance between arrogance and humility, Redman shares it all in this inspiring and unforgettable account. He speaks candidly of the grit that sustained him despite grievous wounds, and of the extraordinary love and devotion of his wife, Erica, and his family, without whom he would not have survived.

Vivid and powerful, emotionally resonant and illuminating,
The Trident traces the evolution of a modern warrior, husband, and father, a man who has come to embody the never-say-die spirit that defines the SEALs, one of America's elite fighting forces.

Free Kindle--The Survey Playbook

This book seems to be aimed at people who create surveys. There may be few, if any, Mobilereaders who check this thread who are involved in creating surveys. However, all of us probably read surveys and it is important for us to know when they are flawed, intentionally or unintentionally, and therefore give inaccurate information.

The book is free and is high-quality.

The Survey Playbook. By Matthew Champagne. Rated 5 stars, but from only 6 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $12.95; digital list price $8.75; Kindle price now $0.00. http://www.amazon.com/Survey-Playboo...urvey+playbook.

Book Description
Why are surveys annoying, badly written, and provide ambiguous results? Because they ignore the 9 Principles of psychology! The Survey Playbook is a how-to guide for those who want to create a successful survey and an entertaining explanation of bad survey practices for those who fill out surveys.

If you are responsible for creating surveys for customers, students, members, or employees, or you are simply interested in why surveys are so annoying and poorly-written, read on!
The Survey Playbook answers these questions:
* How do we increase our response rates?
* Are we asking the "right" questions?
* Is our survey too long?
* What are the best incentives?
* Why are our survey results ambiguous?
* Why don't our customers provide useful comments?
* People have survey fatigue - what options do we have?

This book is written for:
* Those who create surveys for customers, students, members, employees, alumni, or prospects
* Do-it-yourself'ers who use SurveyMonkey or other web-based survey tools
* Evaluation Committee members responsible for improving their course evaluation forms
* Tradeshow organizers who gather feedback from exhibitors and attendees
* College Administrators who interpret and act on faculty evaluation results
* Customer Retention Specialist or others dedicated to engaging and keeping customers
* Directors of Training responsible for instructor evaluations
* Marketing Researchers who have heard conflicting messages about the usefulness of surveys
* Those using web-based or paper-based surveys for accreditation and evaluation purposes
* Those who get annoyed when wasting their time filling out poorly constructed surveys

Fantastic Price (99 cents!) on a Quality World War II Kindle Ebook

The author of this book, J. Lee Ready, is a noted World War II historian and writer.

SS und Polizei: Myths and Lies of Hitler's SS and Police. By J. Lee Ready. Rated 4 stars, but from only 4 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $19.99; digital list price $6.99; Kindle price now $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/SS-Polizei-Myt...+SS+and+Police. 424 pages (paper).

Book Description
SS und POLIZEI: Myths and Lies of Hitler’s SS and Police. This work of 900 Kindle pages looks at the SS and police chronologically by comparing the statements and stories and rumors created by the SS and police about themselves with the actual reality, and points out the glaring discrepancies. E.g. the Nazis believed that racial purity was of paramount importance, and they believed the SS was the vanguard of white supremacy, specifically German supremacy. But the reality was that the race restrictions for membership in the SS were ignored or bent with feeble excuses, such as the enlistment of soldiers from Asia and Africa.

The police of the Third Reich have got to be the most non-stick body of men ever to squeeze through a series of horrific events and emerge smelling like a rose. Hitler’s regime was the police state par excellence, yet at the end of the war none of the Allies thought of blaming his police.

The first part of the book explains the breeding ground of the SS philosophy and the importance of the police and Freikorps in shaping that philosophy. Then follows an explanation of how the SS was accepted into the government. This is followed by a description of the compartmentalizing of the SS into a myriad of departments often totally unrelated, such as an archaeological team, a psychiatric research section, a firing squad and a tank warfare school, to name but four.

After this comes the story of how the Waffen SS grew in World War Two from a poor man’s army operating with hand me downs and despised by the German generals into an elite ‘fire brigade’ force that rescued those same generals on many an occasion.

Within the narrative is an analysis of the interweaving between the police and the SS. This was so intricate that in some units SS and police insignia were both worn at the same time, and some members literally did not know if they were SS or police! This was further muddied when Himmler insisted on assigning duties without regard to the ‘job description’ of SS and police members, such as sending police regiments to the front line to battle Soviet tanks!

In addition the book details that ‘SS’ did not necessarily mean ‘Nazi’, nor did ‘police’ mean ‘Nazi’. Many did not join the Nazi party, though it would have been easier for them if they had. Even some Gestapo personnel did not join the SS or the Nazi Party.

The book ends with the disgusting tale of back-stabbing and betrayal, fanaticism and cowardice that marked the SS and police in the last months of the war.

Normandy: A Graphic History of D-Day, the Allied Invasion of Hitler's Fortress Europe

Today's summer reading giveaway (freebie) at comiXology might interest history buffs: Normandy: A Graphic History of D-Day, the Allied Invasion of Hitler's Fortress Europe

PUBLISHER'S DESCRIPTION:
Normandy depicts the planning and execution of Operation Overlord in graphic novel form. The initial paratrooper assault is shown, as well as the storming of the five D-Day beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. But the story does not end there. Once the Allies got ashore, they had to stay ashore. The Germans made every effort to push them back into the sea. This book depicts such key events in the Allied liberation of Europe as:

Construction of the Mulberry Harbors, two giant artificial harbors built in England and floated across the English Channel so that troops, vehicles, and supplies could be offloaded across the invasion beaches.

The Capture of Cherbourg, the nearest French port, against a labyrinth of German pillboxes

The American fight through the heavy bocage (hedgerow country) to take the vital town of Saint-Lô.

The British-Canadian struggle for the city of Caen against the "Hitler Youth Division," made up of 23,000 seventeen- and eighteen-year-old Nazi fanatics.

The breakout of General Patton's Third Army and the desperate US 30th Division's defense of Mortaine.

The Falaise Pocket, known as the "Killing Ground, " where the remnants of two German armies were trapped and bombed and shelled into submission. The slaughter was so great that 5,000 Germans were buried in one mass grave.

The Liberation of Paris, led by the 2nd Free French Armored Division, which had been fighting for four long years with this goal in mind.

British Post World War II Military Campaigns: The African Affair by Ken Johnston

This book is the fourth in a series of four, describing the exploits of Mark "Mac" Hudson, who held senior rank in British Special Operations Groups. Mac experienced an amazing, but often bizarre military career which spanned several decades and was held in a number of hot spots of operations around the world; from Cyprus in 1955 to the Falklands War in 1982.

I wasn't interested in the comic book, but a couple of topics that the book covered--the Falaise Pocket and the Battle for Mortaine--were either about things that I never knew, was "fuzzy" on, or which I had forgotten. I've bookmarked the Wikipedia articles to go back to them when I have time to read them. So, I appreciated the post!

Huge Price Drop on Highly-Rated Kindle on Lincoln's Faith in God

"Non-fiction" or "Christian interest"--it was pretty much a toss up as to where I should post this book . As you can see, "non-fiction" won out.

Lincoln's Battle with God: A President's Struggle with Faith and What It Meant for America. By Stephen Mansfield. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 88 reviews at the present time. Print list price $22.99; Kindle price $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Lincolns-Battl...nt+for+America.

Book Description
Abraham Lincoln is the most beloved of all U.S. presidents. He freed the slaves, gave the world some of its most beautiful phrases, and redefined the meaning of America. He did all of this with wisdom, compassion, and wit.

Yet, throughout his life, Lincoln fought with God. In his early years in Illinois, he rejected even the existence of God and became the village atheist. In time, this changed but still he wrestled with the truth of the Bible, preachers, doctrines, the will of God, the providence of God, and then, finally, God’s purposes in the Civil War. Still, on the day he was shot, Lincoln said he longed to go to Jerusalem to walk in the Savior’s steps.

What had happened? What was the journey that took Abraham Lincoln from outspoken atheist to a man who yearned to walk in the footsteps of Christ?

In this thrilling journey through a largely unknown part of American history,
New York Times best-selling author Stephen Mansfield tells the richly textured story of Abraham Lincoln’s spiritual life and draws from it a meaning sure to inspire Americans today.
