Less burn-in on the newer Readers over time?

I'm thoroughly enjoying my newer model Sony (505), and am avidly reading a number of books.

I've noticed that there is less of a burn-in on these newer screens. Also, the "burst" when changing pages is implemented somewhat differently.

Harry, and others, is the Gen3 also experiencing less burn-in on the screen? I realize the screens are the same, but perhaps software also plays a part in how pages are turned?

For those who've had this newest Sony since it's release, what are your experiences?

You got me confused there. Are you talking about ghosting!?!

I have the original 500 and there is no burn-in to it but a fair amount of ghosting around the edges. But it disappears with each subsequent page turn.

I was just noticing after lots of time on the cradle, my 500 has a lot of burn in. I'm hoping it will fade with page turns, but might have to go back to Sony before my 3 yr warranty is out if it doesn't improve. It doesn't stand out too much with normal text covering it, but when portions of the screen are blank it does look pretty bad.

Not enough to change any of my opinions of this device, though. I'll still stick, for now, with my Treo and my Sony Reader.

But it would definitely be good news if newer models have less burn-in.

Yes, burn-in or ghosting. Perhaps ghosting is the better term. This was discussed and mentioned quite often in the early days when many of us bought the first 500.

You're right, that it disappears after a page is turned. However, in my two machines, there is a kind of burn in that's visible when both units are turned off.

That's only because when your Reader "turns off", all it's really doing is shifting all the pixels to white. Because eInk is bistable, it needs no power to maintain an image.

The 2nd generation "VizPlex" eInk screens used in the 505, Gen3, Kindle, etc, suffer enormously less ghosting than the 1st generation screen of the 500.

IMHO - 505 has zero ghosting (probably as the rest of readers with the new screen), 500 - has heavy ghosting although tolerable.

Then again, it depends on how you look at the issue. Have you ever read a delux edition of a book printed on india paper? That's what I call ghosting! So, we can say that PRS-500 is just a very exclusive version on a par with delux hardback editions printed on india paper (Bible paper)

Hey, I'm used to reading old yellow paperbacks where you can read the following page through. That's more than ghosting so the tiny amount I get with the 500 I barely notice.

Not zero, but very low. The Gen3 has the option of switching the "flash to black between page turns" off. If you do turn it off, then after a few hundred page turns you do get noticable ghosting. With the standard page clearing method enabled, you get effectively zero ghosting.

Hmm. Sony PRS-505 doesn't have such an option. However, whatever way it is using I don't have any ghosting at all. Literally no ghosting. I don't know how it turns pages though.
