Yes, thanks Bookpossum. Too right.......I see it.......but it wasn't me that nominated it, although it is a book from my country....

Sunsurfer or anybody else: what are the rules for the nominations.....I'll abide by them and will retract my nomination if necessary.
There's a six month rule (a fully-nominated book can't be renominated for six months), but since The Dinner was nominated in May and this is a nomination for November, I think you squeaked past the restriction.

ETA: Or I could be wrong. I'm not an official.

Yep. That is my belief as well since as far as I know Jack London was an American writer.

Then it is ineligible for this month, which is for "Books originally written in a language other than English"

Thank you, Issybird. I do hope it can be a nomination for this month. At the time of the previous nomination(I think you nominated it) I discovered not having read The Dinner and I quickly remedied that. It is a strong modern book which leaves one reflecting on morals and thinking about humanity.

As such it does indeed fail to measure up to the criterion for November. Nomination of The Call of the Wild removed.

I'll third White Fever and add one more nomination to the mix:

The Blind Owl by Sadegh Hidayat. It's dark which could fit the Halloween mood coming up quickly, and it's sparse at around 150 pages.

From Amazon:

The story is narrated by a young man, a painter of miniatures, whose name is never given. He feels an overbearing need to recount an experience he went through that has shattered his whole existence. A beautiful woman, an old man and a cypress tree are the recurring motifs...

Recognized as the outstanding Iranian writer of the twentieth century, Sadegh Hedayat is credited with having brought his country's language and literature into the mainstream of contemporary writing. The Blind Owl, long considered a classic and often compared to the works of Poe, chillingly recreates the labyrinthine movements of a deranged mind...

Ah, sorry to cause angst.

I remembered it because I put it on my TBR list. I'm glad it looks as if it can be in the running.

I'll nominate Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It was converted from the British language.

I saw that you had the last post in this thread and knew it would be something along those lines!

Was Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" originally published in Polish or English? If in Polish I'd like to nominate it. There are several versions over at Amazon including one that is free.

Looks like English is the original which is a bummer - I would have seconded it in a heart beat.
