Are the books you've bought from Amazon showing up in the Archive?

I cannot speak for Dan89, but in my case Amazon bought books do show up in the K4PC/Mac Archive. However, books I bought from Amazon then modified and sent to the cloud as Personal Docs do not show up in Archives. I use Kindle Previewer to rebuild the books after I modify them in Sigil.

That explains the empty Archive.

The option for sending to PC (or Mac, or CloudReader) are always greyed out because Amazon assumes that if you EMAILED the file to your account, that means you must already HAVE the file on your computer already, so you should be able to side-load it to the PC reader.

This may sound like a dumb question, but are the files you're sending the correct file format? You can't send ePubs to your archives; they'll be rejected. Only kindle format files will work (ie: mobi, azw, prc, etc)

They are .mobi and I assume they are the correct format as I can read them on my Kindle/Ipad and they download there fine. Now obviously I can manually add them to the K4PC library by just opening them. This will allow me to read them at home and at work, but since it is not part of the "cloud" library, it doesn't keep up with the page location.

I'm a little confused. Which is working, and which is not? Are you emailing them to the kindle device and they're arriving to your archives, but not arriving on the device? If you access your archives FROM that device, are you able to get them that way? Or can you not even see them? But you CAN see them (and download them) from your iPad?

BTW, Whispersync does not support mobi files. If you want them to sync across your devices, then they have to be converted to a file format that supports Whispersync (azw, PRC, etc).

When you email mobi files to your kindled, simply type the word convert in the subject and they'll be automatically converted to the proper format.

--------------------------

EDIT: disregard this post. I now understand what's going on. I'll post the solution below.

JS Winden is correct; sending documents from the PD list on the Manage Your Kindle page works for all Kindles and apps except K4PC and K4Mac. As to the "Why?" I don't know. Sorry that's not more helpful.

I believe that was me

But now I have to correct my last post. I got a little confused and forgot he was referring to the PC version.

I'm sure it's because they're assuming you already HAVE the file on your computer, since you're emailing the file from a computer.

"I believe that was me."

Apologies, I'll give credit where it is due.

"I'm sure it's because they're assuming you already HAVE the file on your computer..."

If he's reading an isolated copy on his computer, I don't think he'll have the advantage of "last page read" that he would have if the the file was sent from the PD archive. I believe that was his concern.

Dan89, forgive my previous questions. I was delirious. I now understand your situation, so here goes....

First....the "send to kindle" function doesn't work for computer versions of the Kindle app. You can only "send" books to Kindle devices, phones and tablets.

But even if it did work, your books still wouldn't sync between your Kindle and your computer because they're mobi files. Whispersync doesn't support mobi.

If your goal is to be able to read them during the day from a computer, and then at night, pick up where you left off, using your Kindle, then here's your solution...

Instead of loading them onto your Kindle using Calibre, you will have to email them to your device, putting the word convert in the subject line of the email. Amazon will automatically convert them to whispersync compatible files, which will be automatically delivered to your Kindle (takes about 10 or 15 minutes). As a result, your books will now reside in the cloud.

THEN, on your computer, using the K4PC app, you'll have to access your archives (the cloud) and click on them to download there as well.

Unfortunately, emailing them to the Kindle device will create duplicates on your device. But it's not that big of an issue, since it's only two clicks to delete a book. You might want to delete the old ones first, so you don't confuse them.

If it sounds too daunting, then rather than tackling them all in one day, maybe you could transition slowly, doing 5 or 10 books per night.

It might seem like a pain in the butt, but it'll be worth it in the long run to have your books sync for you. Plus, it could be really handy to have them permanently in the cloud. That way you'll be able to access them anytime, anywhere, without needing a computer.

PS: before emailing them, you might want to take a peek at the guidelines. There's a file limit to the number of files that can be attached to a single email, plus an overall size limit of the entire email.

I hope that helped

You're right. I think I was confusing this thread with another I was reading (from a different forum) and I completely lost sight of what the original concern was.

That, plus I'm getting old

Have you upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8?

In the Kindle for PC app, there are no books list (other than the default books that I already deleted), so it is totally blank.
If you have upgraded from a Win 7 PC to a Win 8 PC, then the Win 7 eBooks may not work properly. You have to install the Win 8 K4PC and then re-download every eBook AGAIN.

The app is available here:

No, that's not the problem. The options are greyed out because that feature isn't available for computer versions of the app (or the Cloud reader), only for kindle devices, and mobile apps. And the books aren't syncing because they're mobi files. Whispersync doesn't support mobi format.

Ah, ok, I must have missed this part. So you do have books in your archives (library) already, just not amazon purchases.

Unfortunately, the only solution is to replace all the mobi files in your library with ones that have been converted to a different file format. Actually, since you already have all these books in Calibre, you could just use Calibre to "bulk" convert them all to AZW3. Then when you email them to your kindle, you won't need to put "convert" in the subject.

Unfortunately, even though whispersync supports AZW3 files, they still have to go through Amazon's server in order to be recognized as such. So when loading them into the PC app, you'll have to connect the app to your kindle archives (library) and download them that way.

Opening the files directly from your computer will import them into the Kindle app, but they won't be sync-able unless they're downloaded from your library.
