Free and bargain Non-Fiction in October 2013

As requested, here is an outline of the purpose of this thread:

We point out free and bargain Non-Fiction to each other, and occasionally recommend certain books that are/were free (or the opposite!).

Because Kindle freebies are easiest to find, the majority of the books listed are from Amazon, but freebies and bargains from other retailers and in other formats are more than welcome!

In case no retailer is specifically mentioned in a post, it is safe to assume it's for Amazon US.

Be aware that many freebies are only free for a day, so grab them fast. Enjoy!

-------------------------------------------------

To start you off, you can find last week's freebies from FT Press here (all repeats this week):

http://www.amazon.com/s/?rh=n:154606...isher=FT+Press

And a new freebie from Stackpole:

Massachusetts Breweries (Breweries Series) by John Holl and April Darcy

Any idea if B&N is still doing these? This past week, none of the FT Press books that were free on Amazon went free on B&N (I kept checking it through the week). The only one in this bunch that I don't have is not free at B&N, either.

I appreciate reference work of this nature is not cheap to produce, but I'd love to know of any rather more financially accessible e-material archaelogy works out there.
My small but laden physical history shelves are groaning from the weight of woodpulp tomes, and the bank account is too !
I'm sure I'm not the only amateur archaeology fan who'd be interested.
when I got my very first kindle way back when, I had the same frustrations. I ended up searching on all the go to names like Boaz and so on and found quite a few actually. it takes time but is worth it

It seems to be hit or miss with them. Same on the Agate freebies (several new ones tonight, only at Amazon, though)

I tried to pre-order that one and it asked for a credit card. It even said "Gift Cards are not supported for this transaction." Why would it do that for a book for $0.00?

For whatever reason, Amazon requires a credit card for any pre-order even if it's free. I keep around a VISA gift card that has something like fifty cents left on it just for sites like this. I also use it at Google Play, where you need a credit card on file to get any free books. An extra bonus is that the gift cards will electronically verify with a bogus name (I keep a separate account for freebies at each book store to make sure I don't mistakenly buy something when getting free books).

Tigers in Combat: Vol.1 by Wolfgang Schneider is free from Stackpole Books.
Quote:
Scores of unique photos of Tiger tanks

Intricate and richly colored drawings, with special focus on markings and insignia

Accompanying text lists units' combat strengths, equipment, commanders, and engagements

By the end of World War II, the dreaded Tiger tank had achieved mythical, almost mystical status. In this much-sought-after volume on the Wehrmacht's numbered Tiger units, Wolfgang Schneider tells--in pictures--the story of these renowned tanks. Hundreds of photos depict Tigers in all situations and terrain, and a section of painstakingly detailed drawings brings the tanks to life in the metallic grays, snow whites, desert tans, and forest greens and browns that colored them. Modelers and buffs alike will delight in this impressive collection. Companion to Tigers in Combat Volume Two.

Men Who Killed the Luftwaffe: The U.S. Army Air Forces Against Germany in World War II by Lt Col (Ret) Jay A. Stout
Quote:
Winner of the San Diego Book Award for Military & Politics

Dramatic story of World War II in the air

How the U.S. built an air force of 2.3 million men after starting with 45,000 and defeated the world's best air force

Vivid accounts of aerial combat

In order to defeat Germany in World War II, the Allies needed to destroy the Third Reich's industry and invade its territory, but before they could effectively do either, they had to defeat the Luftwaffe, whose state-of-the-art aircraft and experienced pilots protected German industry and would batter any attempted invasion. This difficult task fell largely to the U.S., which, at the outset, lacked the necessary men, materiel, and training. Over the ensuing years, thanks to visionary leadership and diligent effort, the U.S. Army Air Force developed strategies and tactics and assembled a well-trained force that convincingly defeated the Luftwaffe.

Oh, now store-wise, it's long been Christmas here (early last month). I think Halloween Candy was in stores two months ago....

I've even seen notices of church Halloween "doings" since the last day of last month (as if we would forget that it's on the 31st, I suppose ... although some cities try to make kids celebrate on some other random weekend day, by visiting malls and going store to store, in preparation for their later indoctrination in economic recovery shopping).

So, it isn't me encouraging them, to be sure.

Eminence: Cardinal Richelieu and the Rise of France
by Jean-Vincent Blanchard

is $3.99 at Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Eminence-ebook...words=Eminence

Below is the blurb:
Chief minister to King Louis XIII, Cardinal Richelieu was the architect of a new France in the seventeenth century, and the force behind the nation's rise as a European power. Among the first statesmen to clearly understand the necessity of a balance of powers, he was one of the early realist politicians, practicing in the wake of Niccolò Machiavelli. Truly larger than life, he has captured the imagination of generations, both through his own story and through his portrayal as a ruthless political mastermind in Alexandre Dumas's classic The Three Musketeers.

Forging a nation-state amid the swirl of unruly, grasping nobles, widespread corruption, wars of religion, and an ambitious Habsburg empire, Richelieu's hands were always full. Serving his fickle monarch, he mastered the politics of absolute power. Jean-Vincent Blanchard's rich and insightful new biography brings Richelieu fully to life in all his complexity. At times cruel and ruthless, Richelieu was always devoted to creating a lasting central authority vested in the power of monarchy, a power essential to France's position on the European stage for the next two centuries. Richelieu's careful understanding of politics as spectacle speaks to contemporary readers; much of what he accomplished was promoted strategically through his great passion for theater and literature, and through the romance of power. Éminence offers a rich portrait of a fascinating man and his era, and gives us a keener understanding of the dark arts of politics.

Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light
by Patrick McGilligan

is $2.99 at Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Alfred-Hitchco...fred+Hitchcock

Below is the blurb:
Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light is the definitive biography of the Master of Suspense and the most widely recognized film director of all time.

In a career that spanned six decades and produced more than 60 films – including The 39 Steps, Vertigo, Psycho, and The Birds – Alfred Hitchcock set new standards for cinematic invention and storytelling. Acclaimed biographer Patrick McGilligan re-examines his life and extraordinary work, challenging perceptions of Hitchcock as the “macabre Englishman” and sexual obsessive, and reveals instead the ingenious craftsman, trickster, provocateur, and romantic.

With insights into his relationships with Hollywood legends – such as Cary Grant, James Stewart, Ingrid Bergman, and Grace Kelly – as well as his 54-year marriage to Alma Reville and his inspirations in the thriller genre, the book is full of the same dark humor, cliffhanger suspense, and revelations that are synonymous with one of the most famous and misunderstood figures in cinema.
