Monopoly isn't the key anymore. The key is market domination. That's why in some industries a 30% market share is sufficient, whereas in other markets 80% or more is the necessary threshold.

Doesn't change my personal feelings about keeping the government out of markets unless and until absolutely necessary.

Thanks, Taylor; I think that proves that these "blackmail" theories are utterly without foundation. This, in particular, seems extremely reasonable to me:

Quote:
Another question we've seen: Do I need to switch completely to having my POD titles printed at Amazon?

No, there is no request for exclusivity. Any publisher can use Amazon's POD service just for those units that ship from Amazon and continue to use a different POD service provider for distribution through other channels.

Alternatively, you can use a different POD service provider for all your units. In that case, we ask that you pre-produce a small number of copies of each title (typically five copies), and send those to us in advance (Amazon Advantage Program-successfully used by thousands of big and small publishers). We will inventory those copies. That small cache of inventory allows us to provide the same rapid fulfillment capability to our customers that we would have if we were printing the titles ourselves on POD printing machines located inside our fulfillment centers.
Hardly "blackmail", is it?

Yeah. I admit I was all geared up to hate the big evil company. But their position is actually understandable, and certain arguments (such as pick and pack for mixed orders [POD and pre-printed]) are hard to refute.

I agree with Harry on this point. The yellow water coming down does indeed mean it's raining outside.

"Let us have 5 copies of the book to stock so that we can immediately supply the customer so that they don't have to wait for the POD printer to ship the book to us"

Curious definition of "blackmail", that. I'd call it "improving the customer experience". Good on Amazon for putting the customer's interests first.

I just read the PR again, and nowhere does it mention the claim that Amazon threatened POD publishers. Amazon ignored this claim, which leads me to conclude that it is true.

P.S Here is a definition.
blackmail - (verb) to exert pressure on someone through threats
