Verne, Jules: A Floating City (illustrated). v4. 30 Sep 2013

A Floating City, published in 1871, enjoyed a popularity almost equal to that of Round the World in Eighty Days. The "Floating City" was the direct result of the trip which the author actually made to America in 1867, on the largest iron ship ever built. He gives us a faithful picture of the natural and usual incidents of an ocean voyage of those days, enlivening these by introducing a romance aboard ship. The pictures of the "Great Eastern," are of course exaggerated, not so much in words themselves as in the impressions they convey. But the pictures of New York and of Niagara are the genuine imprint made upon the great writer by his visit.

Hi. I love your books with all the illustrations. They add so much to the atmosphere of the work. Thanks for all your work. Just wanted to point out that in the TOC the entry '"LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS" doesn't point to anything. What can I say, I'm a nitpicking perfectionist.

Thanks TnG, this really is a very nicely done edition, with lovely illustrations.

Modern-day residents of both London and Liverpool might rightly feel a little miffed by Verne's lofty opinion that:

the Mersey, like the Thames, is only an insignificant stream, unworthy the name of river, although it falls into the sea. It is an immense depression of the land filled with water, in fact nothing more than a hole.....

Despite Verne's Gallic attitude towards Merseyside, Timothy Unwin of Liverpool University has made available a useful free French version, with scholarly notes:

http://www.liv.ac.uk/media/livacuk/c..._flottante.pdf

Mr Unwin has restored 37 lines of text in what is now a very short Chapter XIV: these were removed by Verne's original publisher. The deleted lines purport to explain why Dr Pitferge no longer practises his profession: a bizarre and improbable medical incident.

His version also has two of the illustrations in colour, taken from the 1894 de luxe edition.
