Wow I cant believe this topic blew up. So whats the tag for that functionality? Still unknown?
It's alleged to support them--we don't know yet. And what we're discussing is how it would work across all Kindle devices, on the Mobi front, as the other devices patently (no pun intended) don't have pop-up footnotes--and 95% of ePUB readers don't.

We don't even know if the functionality will be provided to self-pubs--just like Audio/Video; it can be done, it just cannot be published by a self-publisher. We'll have to wait and see.

Interesting to see a report accrediting these footnote allegations Wish someone with access to this "Infinite Jest" could unpack and inspect the source.

Sounds like it might be just some sort of heuristic processing of links in existing ebooks. At least I don't think there's been an updated edition of Infinite Jest released to showcase the new footnote feature or anything.

Reasonable assumption. I looked how the first footnote was implemented (from an old epub converted by Calibre, not the Amazon azw3).

Yep just a link to endnotes:
Spoiler:
Code:
CSS:
.calibre2 {
    display: block;
    margin-bottom: 1em;
    margin-left: 0;
    margin-right: 0;
    margin-top: 1em
    }
.calibre5 {
    color: blue;
    cursor: pointer;
    text-decoration: underline
    }

First note in the TEXT:
 cloridrato di metanfetamina <a class="calibre5" href="../Text/index_split_000.html#572">1,</a>

First reference at the ENDNOTE position:
  <p class="calibre2">1 Cloridrato di metanfetamina, detta anche crystal meth.</p>

On a side note, to anybody willing to practice his footnote skills, make an ebook from House of Leaves and meet *the* ultimate challenge

Diap:

Hard to know. If it's simply heuristic processing, GOOD.

Oh, absolutely! Did I forget to mention the "good if so" part?
