Google offers Gmail notifier for your system tray

...if you use windows, that is. Looks like it has been out for a while, but I hadn't seen it. Sits in your system tray and checks every 2 minutes. You don't have to leave a browser open. It also allows you to set Gmail as your primary email, which will let you use the standard system sound for new email, and Gmail will respond to all mailto links. Here's a link to the download page.
