Detective novels, mystery favorites?

A friend has just joined the MobileRead forums, and his favorite genre is detective novels by male American Authors. My own fav is just detective novels by any country's authors, male or female.

I know it's been done in the past, but there are new writers and new ideas. To help my friend in his search for new material, would you please jot down a few of your favorite authors for him?

Mine are:
John Sanford ("Prey" series, "Kidd" series, and "Virgil Flowers" series"
Lee Child ("Reacher" series)
Robert Parker ("Spencer" series)
James Lee Burke ("Dave Robecheau" series)
Jeffery Deaver ("Lincoln Rhyme" series)

All good authors, but I would note in passing that Lee Child is a British author, not American.

C.J. Box - Joe Pickett series. I'd second Michael Connelly and Lee Child. Deaver, Burke, Sanford and Parker are all on my "To check out someday once I've concluded some of my current mystery series" list. A lot of people like Robert Crais and Stephen Hunter, those are two more on my list, can't vouch for them personally yet.

Also, I know that male American authors were requested, but Jo Nesbo (Norway), Arnaldur Indridason (Iceland), Henning Mankell (Sweden) and Tana French (Ireland) are all awesome authors that write crime/detective thrillers.

I like John Connolly's Charlie Parker series. Although Connolly is an Irishman Charlie Parker is American and all 7 books I've read up to now are set in America.

Well, as he didn't specify modern male American Authors, it would be remiss not to mention Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.

Sounds good. And let's take the logic a bit further, and say that as Mary Roberts Rinehart is so good, we'll make her an honorary male.

Are there any difference between mystery/detective and thrillers?

I am asking because I heard that Lee child and C. J. Box write more thrillers rather than proper mysteries.

To add to the list: Lawrence block-Mathew Scudder is my favourite

Off topic: I am half way through Jo Nesbo's 'The Bat' and already impressed. It is more like an Australian mystery than a scandanavian one, and is full of thought provoking stories about/from Auz, and great world/philosophical views etc. I already love him.

The difference is self-explanatory: detective stories involve a detective - either amateur, professional/PI, or a member of the police force - whereas thrillers generally don't. Detective stories can be thrillers, but most thrillers are not detective stories (and equally, most detective stories are not thrillers).

And it is easy to pretend that Craig Rice is male also. Very good books.
