While I don't think that any of Dan Brown's books are good - at least some gave a little temporary enjoyment while reading (light reading & a mix of thoughts along the lines of - "Wow, he's a poor writer"). Lost Symbol was just bad.

Well, it depends. If you haven't read The Hobbit, might as well start with it; it's enjoyable, fairly short and depending on your reading speed, you might even finish it before the end of the weekend, who knows? I remember taking no more than 3 hours to finish, last I read it. The Amulet of Samarkand is also highly enjoyable (the footnotes are hilarious) and more... complex than The Hobbit however, so it's a toss-up between the two.
