It isn't necessary to use Sony's software to buy books any more....they sell from their website now.

You can also buy books from kobo. That is where I buy most of my books.
edit to add:
If your not familiar with calibre I'd wait to use kobo until you get it and get used to it. Not before a trip.

Make sure that calibre is not remaining open in the background. Only one program can connect to the Sony Reader at the same time.
