should I get A real e-reader?

First of all I have a Google Nexus 7 with Kobo and Reader apps...
It seems to me that finding your way around a book is a pain because of having to flip pages without a good index.and extras.Should I add A dedicated reader?

All reading apps should allow you to access the table of contents easily(I don't now how to do this for your specific apps). I prefer FBReader because it tracks books by all kinds of Calibre metadata, so it's easy to find the books I want.

Indexes would be added into each book by the author / publisher, just like pbooks. I don't know that an eInk ereader would generate one for you.

I have a nexus 7 but I don't really enjoy reading on the device. it's brilliant for many things but it's only mediocre as an ereader. Of the devices I have the Kindle paperwhite is the most impressive (as an ereader) though the Kobo Mini is remarkably good value. I mainly like the way epaper is relaxing on the eyes yet oddly I still like the idea of the slight glow from Kindle paperwhite. The battery life is also great. Shouldn't the app remember where you are in any given book?

Every ereader app I've seen and tried on my Galaxy Tab 2 has displayed the table of content without problem and has also remembered where I was when I last used it. Seems to me the books you read are probably at fault, rather than the apps.

That said, I only read for short stretches on the tablet. When I'm sitting down to enjoy a nice, long read there's no way I'd want to be without an e-ink based reader.

Speaking as the owner of both, to my mind reading on an eInk device is a far superior experience to reading on an LCD tablet. Clearer screen, lighter in weight, better UI, and far, far longer battery life.

Up until a couple of months ago, I wasn't sure if there was a point in getting an e-reader, as I already had a couple of iDevices. However, I'm very glad I bought my Kobo Mini... for the current price ($40), it is just not worth NOT getting one IMO. I can read it without as much eye strain, and can easily see the screen when outside in the sun. My hubby also got an eReader at the same time and loves his - he is constantly using it. They are particularly great for going on holiday, and sitting by the pool.

Before switching you should try Mantano Reader out I find it excellent I'm using a light blue background and put my own selection of fonts on it (pretty much all the good reading fonts), I'm still using my Sony for most novels but I have read a few on the Nexus with no complaints just because it's so much easier to put a new book on, the Mantano software I really think is great I wish sony's was half as good.

That said if LCD's bother you or you read a lot outside go for e-ink.

After not reading at all for a good 10 years because my one working eyeball protests after just 10/15 minutes of reading on paper i thought i would give one of these cheap new fangled tablets a shot
So a few years ago i spent $77 dollars on an absolutely horrible tablet
Fortunately the e-reading part of it worked just fine and after fiddling with line spacing and enlarging the font i discovered i could read again - well, up to an hour or so before fatigue/dryness set in bad enough to force me to stop

Recently purchased my first e-reader and i'm happy to report i'm back to the reading fanatic i once was
I still find the reverse image flash that occurs every 6 pages when the screen refreshes quite jarring but i can deal
So of course i would encourage you to try that dedicated e-reader

Have you tried setting it to do a full refresh on every page? I wonder if the infrequent flash is worse than the frequent flash in that it still comes by surprise. I personally find that to be the case, and set my Paperwhite to refresh on every page as the flash never bothered me on my K3 (which didn't have a 6 page option) and I like a screen free of artifacts.

very good question
i think it would drive me absolutely bonkers
the whole reason i didn't purchase an e-reader ages ago was because of that reverse image
a friend had an overpriced kindle that i tried out but that reverse image flash could not be dealt with
too bad this problem can't be solved with an e-ink type screen - something that happens in the background that is not perceptible by the human eye

I see you have a Kobo Aura. If you do some digging in the Kobo subforum you should be able to find a post on changing the refresh to more than 6 pages. No rooting involved, just a change in one of the config files IIRC. Personally I do every page refresh, but there seem to be quite a few people who are happy with it set for more than 6.

I haaaaated the page-turn-inversion-flash at first. Having gotten used to it, I now find it actually less distracting on the flash-every-page setting than on flash-every-3 (or 6). I think I've learnt to blink as the page turns, and I don't really notice it any more.

The overwhelming majority of people who use eInk devices don't consciously see the "flash" after using it for a few hours - your brain just filters it out.

BTW, why did your friend buy an "overpriced" Kindle? Why didn't he buy it at the normal price?
