The Crystal Empire ($7.99 Kindle), a stand-alone novel by L. Neil Smith, is this month's free book from Phoenix Pick.

Quote:
Earth is ruled by three mighty empires: The Saracen-Jewish Empire led by the Caliph of Rome, the Mughal-Arab Empire, ferocious in its determination to destroy its neighbor, and the great Sino-Aztec's Crystal Empire, led by a living God.

Little is known about the Crystal Empire, which spans most of western America. But it is the most powerful force surviving on Earth and its might is unchallenged.

One man, however, will change that. Sedrich Sedrichsohn, a legendary fallen fighter, has a chance at redemption and nothing will stand in his way to reclaim his life and his purpose, even if he must fight the Sun-God himself.
Get the free ebook from Phoenix Pick. You'll need to find the book's listing, click on "FREE EBOOK of the Month", then enter coupon code 9991642. Click thru the next page and then scroll down and get the formats of your choice. They are DRM-free, so you can convert to other formats, if desired.

I think I did this right as far as affiliate links, but I don't usually post.

For those of us interested in YA science fiction, Malinda Lo's Adaptation is 4.99 until June 10. I think the normal price is 9.99.

Quote:
Across North America, flocks of birds hurl themselves into airplanes, causing at least a dozen to crash. Thousands of people die. Fearing terrorism, the United States government grounds all flights, and millions of travelers are stranded.

Reese and her debate team partner and longtime crush David are in Arizona when it happens. Everyone knows the world will never be the same. On their drive home to San Francisco, along a stretch of empty highway at night in the middle of Nevada, a bird flies into their headlights. The car flips over. When they wake up in a military hospital, the doctor won't tell them what happened, where they are--or how they've been miraculously healed.

Things become even stranger when Reese returns home. San Francisco feels like a different place with police enforcing curfew, hazmat teams collecting dead birds, and a strange presence that seems to be following her. When Reese unexpectedly collides with the beautiful Amber Gray, her search for the truth is forced in an entirely new direction--and threatens to expose a vast global conspiracy that the government has worked for decades to keep secret.

Amazon UK are having a week of additional SF/F Daily Deals. Today's book is Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, for £0.99.

(Yesterday's was Sandman Slim. Sadly, I already have both.)

I think I can resist, but someone here may be interested.

Wish Amazon US would do Snow Crash for cheaper than the $9.99 they are asking....

Iain (M) Banks

I'm not sure if it's a bargain but Amazon UK have been reducing a lot of Iain (M) Banks novels to £3.79 each.

Today's UK Kindle Daily Deal is Fireblood by Jeff Wheeler

Product Description
Tyrus of Kenatos has made it his life’s work to banish the plagues that ravage the kingdoms. He believes the answer to ending the devastation lies in the Scourgelands. Yet, Tyrus’s first expedition into the cursed woods failed after being defeated by mysterious minions who stalked and killed most of his band.

Now a prisoner in his own tower, Tyrus has summoned his nephew Annon—a Druidecht possessing innate magic called the fireblood—on the guise of finding a hidden treasure with which to purchase his twin sister Hettie’s freedom. But in reality, Tyrus is using his niece and nephew, and their magic, as an opportunity to escape and resume his desperate mission. And to aid them, he has enlisted the warrior-monk Paedrin—who is almost as green as the siblings when it comes to traveling these troubled lands. The trio is determined, and along the way they grow to trust each other—and new additions to the group—in order to accomplish their missions…whether or not those missions are one and the same.

But the Arch-Rike—ruthless ruler of Kenatos—has learned of these plans, and has sent the fearsome Kishion to destroy all those that oppose him. Now Tyrus and his unwitting allies must face down not only the plague, but this new enemy—and fulfill their quest before a fresh horror is unleashed on the world…

About the Author
Author of the Muirwood Trilogy, Landmoor, Silverkin, and numerous stories and articles for the fantasy e-zine Deep Magic, Jeff Wheeler has long been fascinated with medieval history and lore. His inspiration for Fireblood stemmed from reading about the Black Death and its devastation in Europe and from his research of ancient Roman and Greek civilizations.

Jeff is a writer from 7-10 p.m. on Wednesday nights. The rest of the time, he works for Intel Corporation, is a husband, a father of five kids, and a leader in his local church. He lives in Rocklin, California. When he isn’t listening to books during his commute, he is dreaming up new stories to write.
