In looking again at the technology to double-check the oil/water, I did come across this presentation from a couple of years back, which says that Liquavista displays could be implemented on flexible backplanes. I don't know if they've actually done this, but I hadn't realised that this could even be an option. It makes me even more optimistic about the longer-term future of the technology.

There's a technical paper on their website if anyone wants to give it a quick read. It amazes me how we are looking at a technology where basic elements such as water and oil interact with electronics to get to the desired outcome of screen properties.

OT:

The old technomage fills his screeing bowl from the water pitcher his eager
young apprentice has brought. Then he empties a small vial of oil into the
water. Passing his hand over the bowl he activates the circuits in the bowl
and a shimmering image of a very old dragon takes shape in the water.

A rumbling voice comes from the bowl -"Knight takes Queen, Checkmate!"

Wizards not being known for their self-restraint, it comes as no surprise that
the bowl is immediately tumbling through the air and its contents forming
numerous small puddles filled with the laughing face of a smug dragon.

Luck;
Ken
