Copy plain text from ebook reader

How can one copy plain text (as in highlight some text followed by ctrl/c) from the ebook-reader into the paste buffer - without any html being written to the paste buffer?

This is what I get when I copy a few words in ebook-viewer to the paste buffer

Spoiler:

IIRC, the viewer puts both plain text and html in the clipboard, whatever application you are pasting in probably preferentially takes the html. You need to change that in the application.

Kovid, that's a lot of applications software & services

Attachment shows what Blogger thinks of a paste from Calibre Viewer into a blog post Comment

If I copy the same text fragment from the same epub file from within EPUBReader, MobiPocket or Sigil Preview then all I get is the text.

If I copy the same text fragment from the equivalent PDF within XChange Reader then all I get is the text, I don't get the underlying Postcript

If I copy a fragment of this post all I get is the text - I don't get all the underlying HTML that's put there by the forum software.

IMO it's Calibre's viewer that's the exception to the rule.

Perhaps not so many? I tried pasting into various of MSOffice Suite (2007), NotePad, Nokia Suite's SMS editor, TextAloud, etc. and just got text in every case. I also pasted into his forum's post editor and into Sigil, both of which I would have thought perhaps more likely to show the HTML, but again just the text.

That doesn't answer your original question though unless your experience with the likes of the above applications is different. If so, I can only say that I am doing something clever (but don't ask me what it is that I am doing ).

I don't get this at all. Here is a raw sample (BBcode quote added) pasted from an epub in the viewer:

Quote:
Call me Ishmael. Some years ago—never mind how long precisely— having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation.
My experience down the line is the same as AnotherCat's.

Even blogger accepted the paste as text, see attached.

FYI I am running:

Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
Calibre Portable 0.9.29

If you pm a link to the book I'll be happy to try that MS infested book in the viewer.

@AnotherCat - thanks for the feedback, see attachment to see what I get when I copy pasta from the calibre reader to MS Word 2007.

I'm not running any clipboard extenders (because I've disabled it)

Notepad++ is one program I use that does ignore the HTML, I know this because I use it as the place to offload the HTML bloat before copying into Blogger & Word Press comments or Word documents. I just discovered that Live Writer also ignores the HTML.

This is not a new problem, I've had it since I installed Calibre ~18 months ago, so why has it taken me this long to complain. Well, I'm a fault tolerant person, but yesterday I ran into the issue several times, so it was a case of... Enough already!

But, what does calibre do that the other HTML processors don't do. or what do they do that calibre doesn't do?

Which layout engine does Calibre use to render the EPUBs? I don't get this with Gecko(Firefox), Webkit(Chrome) or Trident (IE) browsers.

Often wondered if this a case of "Like this for everyone or just me?"

Yes, MSWord for me also shows the paste as formatted by the HTML (so links show, just as they do in your MSWord example (on basis of a quick check the actual hyperlink itself is not under them though).

Similarly the same in this forum's post editor, but in Nokia Suite's SMS editor the paste is just plain text.

So, it seems those few examples follow a rule along the lines that they take the formatting (at least some of it) if it is an application which one would expect it to (a MSWord document or a forum post editor, for example), but just the plain text in cases where the formatting is redundant (in an sms message, for example).

I'm not into blog editors but I would have thought they would act something like MSWord and this forum's post editor and a paste would be formatted but, unlike your bog editor example, the HTML not show. What happens if you post/publish (whatever the blog term is) your blog example that shows the actual HTML itself in the editor?

Hi Doctorohh, we cross posted - again

Its MS infested because its from Rand Corp who only publish in Word & PDF, if I complain they'll send black helicopters

If I post that fragment from the Calibre manual into Blogger then its plain text. But as you can see that's not so if I paste it into Word.

So I think Word is 'part of the problem', I convert from RTF, but Filtered HTML gives the same result - except I lose some formatting (eg small caps). I suspect its only documents that originate from Word or pass through it on the way to becoming an EPUB that give the problem.

Please don't suggest I use Sigil - I have developed many macros for MS Office over the past 30 years, I use them habitually in word, and some of them I also I use in excel.

Its not a significant issue, I can put up with stopping off at Notepad++ to unload the HTML when needed. And I also just spotted several widgets that will remove formatting from the clipboard contents - I'll have a look at them, I suspect that's the best solution.

It is standard behavior on Windows for applications to post multiple formats in the clipboard buffer when copying. Often they only post an "IOU" reserving the actual data movement for some future time when an application requests the data in response to a Paste command.

Calibre quite properly follows this behavior and posts a variety of formats. You can view the options by accessing the Windows accessory app "Clipboard Viewer". The "cure" for the OP's issue is to use the Windows standard "Paste Special..." option in the app used for Pasting. Not all apps have this, but all good ones do (and my browser of choice, Opera, fails at this -- bad Opera). The OP can check this with his copy of Notepad++ which provides the option (though the menu option is oddly located far below the "Paste" option). Using an intermediate app to "Paste Special..." the desired format and then re-Copying is a reasonable workaround that will usually work.

It's true that many apps fail to support "Paste Special...". We had issues with this back when I was on the FreeHand team at Macromedia. Too many of our users needed to paste into other apps that failed to support Paste Special and we added a rather unique "Copy Special" options that allows manual control of the copy format on a per Copy basis.

Thanks mate.

Its a can of worms, an utter shambles... consistently inconsistent.

Blogjet sees the HTML, if I post it to my Wordpress blog its unreadable because it's 'incompatible' with my Wordpress theme - the text is silver on yellow - I have to select it to read it. Live writer doesn't see the HTML, but it says it cant find my Wordpress theme so the text arrives in black on white Courier New

Surprising no one else has noticed these inconsistencies. I wonder if w3C has anything to say on the matter. I might have a look when I get one of these clipboard cleaners working...

@dwig - fantastic

I'd forgotten all that (getting old) that's fixes the Word problem ==>> http://www.dummies.com/how-to/conten...l-in-word.html

I wonder if there's a fix for Blogger comments, that's the one that really annoys me. Apparently Ctrl/Shift/V is supposed to to Paste with no formatting in Firefox, but its not working because an extension has grabbed the shortcut (one of my blockers no doubt) - if not a clippy cleaner will fix it - I hope.

If it is pasting INTO MSWord you are after, then one can make it default to pasting text only from other programs in Word Options>Advanced>Cut, copy and paste>Pasting from other programs>Keep text only.

Thanks mate,

Word wasn't my main concern, but I've selected that option now, IMO text only should be the default, but... I'd completely forgotten the purpose of the 'thingy' that pops up after a paste - never occurred to me to click on it to see if it solved this issue.

The blogger issue gets curiouser and curiouser -

I restarted Firefox in Safe Mode to try to sort out this Shift/Control/V issue, it didn't do anything when I used it in a blogger comment area with an epub-viewer fragment I had the clipboard

So I pasted the fragment into blogger with Ctrl/V - begorrah, bygum... it pasted plain text!!

Which made me think, must be an a Firefox add-in issue.

So I restarted Firefox, in normal mode - guess what, yes a paste into a blogger comment was plain text !!

So what changed between yesterday and today.

3 extensions were updated - Flashgot, Tabmix and Anonymox (that's disabled)
I plug-in was updated - Google Update Plugin

It could also be a bug in firefox - it still 'leaks' like a sieve*, I'll test again after I've given the browser a bashing at the end of the day.

BR

* memory leaks - so called 'memory leaks' are the result of not freeing up allocated memory when its no longer needed, 'memory loss' would be better. The original memory leaks occurred on mercury delay line memory, Turing suggested that the use of Gin rather than mercury. You could observe mercury delay line memory bits flipping - it was an acoustic device. Sound travels fast in mercury, no idea how fast it is in Gin, but it would be faster than air, which quite slow
