question

can you set caliber to use program shortcuts as plugins. this way you could leave Nopad++ in timpuktoo and go right to it. this would also keep desktop clean

Could you be more specific about what you're asking for?

If you want to use Calibre as a program launcher, it's possible although there are better solutions out there. You can drag a shortcut into Calibre and it will be entered in the database as a book entry (despite the fact that it's not a book). When you double-click on it, it will execute the program the shortcut points to.

If instead you want to open books in your library with external programs, either disable them in the list of formats Calibre uses its internal reader for, or get the Open With plugin, which you can set up to use as many external programs as you want.

A better way would be to open Calibre, use it to open Notepad ++. Clean Xhtml or html files with Notepad ++. Then go to Sigil to set up the epub and configure css file. Use Gimp 2 for resizing the cover you need in the epub. Take the finished epub into Adobe Digital or other epub readers and make needed changes using either Sigil or Edit Book.

Upload the epub into Kindle Previewer or Kindlegen. Split the mobi files, use MobiPocket Reader or Kindle to see what it looks like and make needed changes in Edit Book. I would also like to use Calibre Viewer and read the mobi from it.

I have a lot of bad epub files taken from Pdf's and they need a lot of cleaning. It would help if I could keep the finished epub or mobi files inside Calibre . This would let me switch from reading the epub or mobi files in Calibre Viewer, Kindle or Adobe Digital and Azardi.

The only way I can think of to do this would be to upload the epub and mobi files and rename them to *****_v1, v2, or v3 and so on.

When I want to read the epub or mobi files, I would like to be able to switch from v1 or v2, click on the needed plugin and go right to the book. This would also let me get rid of all those shortcuts scattered about the desktop and keep Notepad ++ inside the program files and just use Calibre and go to the needed plugin when needed.

Did you even bother to read and look at the Open With PI info? Probably not.

Openwith has suggested defaults configured:

GIMP, Paintshop pro for covers
Sigil for EPUB
Adobe for (native) PDF

and many more (many with 32 and 64 bit configs)

(IIRC NP++ was not one, but it was simple to add on the Windows)

@I want to know - Calibre is a tool that facilitates the management of personal ebook libraries.

You seem to be looking for something that facilitates the operation of a particular multi step process. i.e your so-called "A better way...".

Why don't you use something like powershell or autohotkey to manage/automate that process, that's what they do best, just as calibre does ebook management best.

To put it another way, you're trying to use a saw to dig a hole in a your garden. IMO you would get a better hole if you used a shovel - I suspect that you'd also get it faster.

First, the Open With plugin is great for opening books in external viewers. Just download it and play around with it. You'll thank us.

Second, it sounds like you're talking not just about viewing books, but editing them. Let me outline my process for cleaning books. Maybe it will give you some pointers.

1. I import the book I need to clean into my "Working" library. Convert to htmlz. Save to file. Delete from Working library.

2. I unzip the htmlz file, producing an index.html file, cover, and auxiliary files.

3. I clean the index.html file by hand using Notepad++ and a couple of other tools. This process can be tedious, but it's the only way I can be sure it's right.

4. I import the index.html file into my "Main" library. I fix the metadata, import the cover, etc.

5. I convert it to Epub format.

The nice thing about this process is that by the time it goes into my final library, I've already confirmed that it's exactly the way I want. No messing around with different versions of books, etc. If I need to convert it to Mobi or other formats, it's already nice and clean so there shouldn't ever be a need to do any post-conversion work on it.

Also, my process automatically creates backups at every step. I have the original file that I can always convert again if everything falls apart. I have the htmlz file that I can unzip again if I screw up in editing. And I have the cleaned html file, which I put in a separate "Library" folder on my hard drive as a kind of archive in case I discover later I need to do some more cleanup.

I wouldn't recommend trying to do your editing on the book inside Calibre's library. Do it all externally, and it will probably work a lot better.

Or use the built in calibre editor, which can also be used standalone as ebook-edit.exe

It handles epubs, with packaging, and has mny powerful options for search and replace, global undo/versioning, spellcheck, export files to other programs, epub validation to check for errors, and a live preview of the results.

It started off as notepad++ on steroids and then got better.
