Don't forget Pournelle and Niven's Lucifer's Hammer. Pretty close to home about a comet hitting the earth. And it was nominated for a Hugo for Best Novel in 1978.

Would definitely endorse the Iain M Banks recommendation for intelligent space opera.

Well to get the ball rolling I've decided to start with Consider Phlebas.

Good choice. I'd second/third the recommendations for Banks and Alastair Reynolds.

I started with Player of Games, myself, and it's still one of my favourites, but Consider Phlebas was the first written, and it mostly makes sense to read them in order.

Both are signs of the times...

Thanks for posting that. Yeah sadly, quality sometimes has very little to do with anything.

Speaking of Niven:

Niven; Barnes: Dreampark trilogy.
Crime in a Startekish holodeck-like park offering live RPGs.

Not space opera, more of a detective novel, but one that I fully recommend myself.

Also loved this book. I used to refer to it as an adult version of Ender's Game.

He's been nominated for several Hugo awards, so I imagine that he is not unknown.

I just re-read the start of Transitions and I was reminded how unpopular some readers in the USA might find his outspoken politics.
